Michael Torke has been called "the Ravel of his generation" for the "shimmering timbral palette" he employs in his orchestrations (The New York Times). Tonight we hear a suiteably luminous example, in his chamber piece "Music on the Floor."

Many of Torke's works employ an expanded abstract tonality, taking their inspiration from vivid colors (due to his synesthesia). Tonight's piece is an exception, however, and represents what Torke calls his "retro" style — which paraphrases functional music gestures and distinguishes itself through unusual instrumental combinations.
