Richard Danielpour

Saturday, September 15, 2007

Richard Danielpour's opera "Margaret Garner" (with a libretto by Toni Morrison) is based on the true story of an escaped slave in the 1850s. Margaret Garner, fearing recapture, kills her children and herself rather than return to slavery. "Margaret Garner" explores important dialogues on race in the United States, and joins Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" as one of the few operas devoted to the African-American experience.
