Earl Wild's "Variations on an American Theme," which the composer subtitled "Doo-Dah" Variations, takes Stephen Foster's American classic "Camptown Races" as its base. Wild said of the piece's inspiration: "I began to plan seriously for this work while enjoying one of the comical Doo-Dah parades that have sprung up almost spontaneously in many American cities as a popular reaction to more traditional Fourth of July celebrations."
