The Tao of Cage

John Cage was greatly influenced by Taoism and Zen Buddhism, and accordingly often sought to dissolve expression and intention from his works. Tonight we hear his mesmerizing 1950 work for violin and keyboard, "Six Melodies."

John Cage's "Six Melodies" are reminiscent of Erik Satie in their wispy, hypnotic, restrained quality. Cage famously pronounced, "The responsibility of the artist consists in perfecting his work so that it may become attractively disinteresting."
