Saturday, March 03, 2007

Legendary Hungarian actress and singer Marta Eggerth has illuminated both the international stage and screen for over 70 years. She enjoyed a lengthy run opposite her husband, Polish actor Jan Kiepura, in "The Merry Widow" on Broadway, starred in over 40 films, and recently performed a New York concert - at the age of 96.

I was delighted with David Garland's program recently and the wonderfully creamy voice of soprano Marta Eggerth in recordings of 1936, and 1932. I had never heard her voice before! perhaps I had, but, did not assign it to any specific person. Just gave me the chills. With her sounds coming into my ear while cuddled up in bed gave me just the lift needed to wake up again with a smile on mt face. To think she's still performing at the age of 96! The piano accompaniment was excellent too! I remember those days of long ago when my Mom and Dad would entertain their church groups with music and song. I would accompany my Mom with songs like Bless This House on our Steinway with Dad either whistling or playing his violin softy in support. Thank you WYNC, David, and Marta... do send her my respect and love.
