Terry Riley began his long association with the Kronos Quartet when he met violinist David Harrington while teaching at Mills College in the 1970s. Riley has composed 12 string quartets for the ensemble, the most heartfelt of which is tonight's featured work, Requiem for Adam. An uplifting musical tribute to Harrington's son Adam, who passed away in 1995 while on a hiking trip with his family, Requiem for Adam is joined on the same album by a solo piano improvisation by Riley in memory of his long-time friend and teacher Pandit Pran Nath, "The Philosopher's Hand."
