Rautavaara's concerto is entitled "Cantus Arcticus," which means "Songs of the Arctic." The composer traveled into the far northern part of Scandinavia to record the natural sounds of the area, including the sounds of birds — which he later incorporated (to chilling effect) into his work, using the orchestra to recreate the feeling of a remote landscape.

I second that. I was floored by Cantus Arcticus, and had never heard it before.
I have been listening to the liberated Evening Music. About time...no Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms. Just interesting modern music, category irrelevant. It could be a revival of 60s programming; stick with it, this is clearly the most interesting music program on radio right now...don't lose your courage.
