Incoming General Manager and Artistic Director, New York City Opera
The famed opera producer/impresario is currently finishing his tenure as director of the Paris National Opera. Mortier's first season at the City Opera, 2009-2010, will eschew Mozart and Puccini for 20th century works, including Philip Glass's "Einstein on the Beach."

Mimi S. Daitz from Manhattan

Have greatly enjoyed the series. It might have been interesting for your listeners tonight to know the composer and lyricist of the song "Strange Fruit," heard on your program in the superb performance by Billie Holiday. The music and lyrics were by Lewis Allan. He and his wife, Anne Allan, adopted the two Rosenberg sons when their parents were executed by our government during the hight of the McCarthy period. The real name of the song writer and his theater director/teacher wife was Meerapol. I thought this was particularly interesting in light of Gerard Mortier's comments about music and politics.
