In perfect tune with the Absolute Ensemble's approach is John Adam's Chamber Symphony, which merges the virtuosic expressionism of Schoenberg with the manic world of cartoon soundtrack music. Scored for an unusual combination of 15 instruments, the symphony won the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award for best chamber composition in 1994.
