My first contact with "Tristan" was just behind the front lines in Korea in 1952/53, where I purchased the six-LP RCA Victor Recording with Kirstin Flagstad and Set Svanholm, Solti conducting, in an Army PX. In those days Army PXs carried that kind of music.
To this day I still hear the crackle of Korean sands under that wonderful music in this recording. Since then I have heard countless great performances at the Met, with artists such as Flagstad, Traubel, Martha Modle (sp?), Margaret Harshaw, Vinay, Svanholm, Vickers, and most recently Eaglen and Heppner. I also recall Jess Thomas, Astrid Varnay though not sure if it was "Tristan". All I can say is every note of that music moves me beyond comprehension.
