Viennese composer Wenzel Thomas Matiegka’s Nocturne for flute, violin, and guitar was reworked by Franz Schubert, in order to make of it a quartet, but . . .
Schubert’s reconception involved an added cello part and a second Trio for the Minuet as well as a virtuoso variation for the cello in the last movement. But that version of the work was never completed. What you will hear in this evening’s second hour is a version completed by JoAnn Faletta, herself a guitarist. She has created a quintet, one performed by herself on guitar, with Alexa Still on flute, Robert Almenty on clarinet, Paul Neubauer on viola, and Ronald Thomas on cello.
Before that, during hour one, you’ll enjoy Peter Serkin playing Stravinsky’s Serenade for Piano in A, Mozart’s Symphony No. 42 as essayed by Sir Charles Mackerras and the Prague Chamber Orchestra, the Leo Delibes ballet, “Le Roi s’amuse,” played by the Bohemia Chamber Philharmonic under Douglas Bostock.
It’s mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne’s birthday (1934), so we’ll celebrate by listening to her join soprano Leontyne Price in the duet ‘Mira, o Norma, Norma’ from Bellini’s famous opera, James Levine conducting the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Our last hour features Claude Debussy’s “Nocturnes” in a lush performance by the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Ambrosian Singers, Michael Tilson Thomas at the helm.
