Four Rockin' Guitars

« previous episode | next episode »

Thursday, January 13, 2005

When is a Bach Orchestral Suite not played by an orchestra? When the Brazilian Guitar Quartet get hold of it, rearrange it for four rockin’ guitars, and blow your mind. . .
Yes, Evening Music brings you Bach for guitar: two 8-stringed instruments join two conventional 6-string guitars in a refreshing take on the Orchestral Suite No. 1 by the Brazilian Guitar Quartet, led by world-acclaimed Paul Galbraith. His cohorts are Edelton and Everton Gloeden, plus Tadeu do Amaral. (Paul and Everton are the 8-string guitarists.) You can hear this outstanding group live at the 92nd Street Y on January 20th.

Our second hour brings you Beethoven’s second “Razumovsky” quartet (formally known as String Quartet No. 8 in E Minor) performed by the Takacs Quartet, which can be heard playing all the Beethoven quartets at Lincoln center this month.

Hour three features the celebrated Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, who plays Leos Janacek’s “In the Mist” and ‘Tunes and Dances’ from Harald Saeverud’s “Siljustol.” You can hear him live as well. Check out the Carnegie Hall listing for January 20th.

It’s Aaron Jay Kernis’s birthday today. We bring you his “Lament and Prayer” toward the end of the evening, David Zinman conducting the Minnesota Orchestra. But you can hear this same work live, performed by the New York Philharmonic from January 20th through January 22nd.
