It's among the most talked-about opera events of the fall season. Bellini's Il Pirata receives its Metropolitan
Opera premiere with nine performances beginning October 21. The production by John Copley stars soprano Renée Fleming as Imogene, Marcello Giordani as Gualtiero, and Dwayne Croft as Ernesto. In anticipation, Sunday's Evening Music will feature the opera's climactic final scene--the celebrated "mad scene"--as featured on Fleming's new CD, Bel Canto. Fleming's
ability to identify with her larger-than-life heroines as well as her exceptionally graceful, agile, and expressive voice are revealed throughout this 20-minute scene, and she hits the repeated high C's at the end of the cabaletta with real gusto. This recording features sympathetic accompaniment from Patrick Summers leading the Orchestra of St. Luke's.
