With one week until the New York City Marathon, Dr. Jordan Metzl, a 27-time marathon runner, sports medicine physician at the Hospital for Special Surgery, and medical columnist at Triathlete Magazine shares training advice and stories of treating New York City’s marathon runners.

    What advise would you give for first time runners?

    Is there anything the spectators can do for the runners?

    What is your advice for someone that wants to take the challenge of running a marathon for the first time after loosing a lot of weight (100+ pounds). What kind of program should be done? Also, how long does it take to train for a first marathon?

    CARBOHYDRATE MYTH.

    Can you discuss whether so called "card loading" the night before the marathon has any measurable benefit for runners on the day of the race.

    I'll be running my second NYC Marathon next weekend, (5th total) and am getting REALLY EXCITED! Thank you to any spectators who come out.

    Another bad hill- 5th Ave. before entering the park. It's not huge, but it's long, and after 23 miles, it hurts!!

    This will be my 21st NYC Marathon having run every one [save 91'] since 1988. Why do I do it? well, for one day, at least, I become a [true] New Yorker again. I love the crowds and their love feeds us all. Its an amazing and unique symbiotic experience. [except the ones who cheer you on at mile 4 saying 'your almost there'- believe me. we're not!]

    the next reason is personal. Its part of my natural rhythm of cyclical renewal. I let my body deteriorate over the winter and come spring.. I begin the process of building it up again. By marathon day, i am at my physical peak for the entire year.

    Finally, as carl wallenda famously said, 'you only live when you are on the wire', transposed here to read, you only feel alive when you are tested the greatest. Believe me, the marathon will humble you both physically, mentally and even spiritually.. and thats when you will feel most alive.

    PS. I have met Dr. Metzl several times and can attest to his professionalism. He is a doctor who truly understands marathoning as he is a runner himself.

    I don't run any more (bad knees from running) but my wife and I have been spectators for decades and recently, I have been volunteering with the Road Runners. Last year, I had a great job - "Chip Clipper". A lot of fun. This year, I will be at mile 24 handing out water or

    Gatorade to the runners. I can't wait! Good luck to everyone who still has the chops to run in the greatest race in the greatest place.
