So, Brian is cross-promoting another show on the station, along with its host's book --- a book! dead tree media! --- on his show. The old media business model ain't dead yet. :)
(In fairness, Brian was the original host of On the Media, so his interest in it isn't purely, pardon the term, commercial.)
The Executive Producer for news let it slip this morning - "Almost half of WNYC's budget comes from listeners like you" - The flip side of that means probably 60 percent or more of WNYC's budget comes from corporate sponsors. Hmmm....are there any board members of WNYC who are objective to the main goal of providing a public service? WNYC lost me as a donor when I woke up and smelled the coffee on the megalomanic 'non-profit' empire that is building. WNYC a real nice business, plain and simple. and btw, please take away The Take Away.

Since I'm planning on dressing as you for halloween, I got the smirk like totally down and I am picking up the beard/brown tweed blazer this weekend. Now, pray tell: give me the one secret detail that will bring my costume to life? (and no bob this isn't jeff jarvis. )
"Geekazoid losers" ??
Brian, you going to let him get away with that insult, disguised as "journalism?'
The news *business* isn't essential to democracy. The NEWS is essential. And frankly, the Times, NPR, CNN have been doing a poor job in recent years.
Viewership of the network channels is down because program quality is down. The so-called "reality shows" are by and large junk, and not worth the time of day.
One lineup of good shows remains on CBS on Friday nights, with 8 pm Ghost Whisperer, 9 pm Medium and 10 pm Numbers. This resulted when NBC stupidly released Medium, and CBS picked it up, adding it to their Friday night lineup.
The hypocrisy here is mind-numbing.
My organization:
has been trying to get ONE WORD of coverage about JUDICIAL CORRUPTION in New York for over three years.
Not only does WNYC refuse to cover this urgent topic, they refuse to announce the Senate Public Hearings on the subject,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28afajRkDwY
Furthermore, WNYC has blacklisted members of the organization, refusing to return emails or phone calls.
Why? The WNYC Board of trustees is loaded with parties invested in the status quo.
In her fundraising clip, Brooke Gladstone cites a WNYC "Charter" but WNYC will not acknowledge its existence.
WNYC has lots of great programming but they are not independent.
Glenn from Manhattan,
You nailed it.
