Shocking and sad, but let's keep in mind that there are plenty of New Yorkers who immigrated from villages in other countries where kids double and triple up on a single pair of clothes.

(point being they are introducing a shocking practice that, sadly, is normal for many or even most people in the world)

Brian - BIG MISTAKE - a housing issue that you misrepresented a few minutes ago.

You said in the last segment that Paterson's agenda includes the bill to repeal vacancy decontrol. WRONG! Paterson did NOT include this on the agenda. Housing groups are terrified that this won't even come up to a vote after all our work to get it passed this year.

Our homelessness issue is directly related to steady loss of affordable housing. Please make this correction on the air and consider inviting someone from housing groups to explain this latest development on the air.

  • [4] when will it end? from uws June 23, 2009 - 10:38AM

It's a cycle. Structural changes are needed to undo redlining, bad schools, inequities in incarceration rates, etc. Community changes are also needed: irresponsible parenting, rigid sexual roles, homophobia.

Nobody should be homeless. That being said, who the hell can afford to live in Manhattan or any of the other borrows? I’m so tired of hearing poor folk, artists and low wage earning hipsters on how they deserve to live in NYC even though they don’t and won’t ever have the cash. Boo hoo hoo, you can’t live in your hood you grew up in or bonded with. Do what the rest of us in the real world, move to someplace affordable and commute to work if you have to. Don’t like it, to bad, your not alone. At least you can have a roof over your head and not foolishly spend %50 of your income on shelter. What planet are you people living on? NYC is not the only town going through this. I’d love to buy a house in the town I grew up in. But over the last 20 years the house pricing and cost of living have gone well beyond my means. Am I sad and disappointed? Sure. But that’s the way life is.

Uh, JP from the Garden State, you got one thing right:'NYC is not the only town going through this'. Housing costs in Jersey (or NY) anywhere within commuting distance of the city are also exorbitant. And wake up, poor folks are trying to hang on in this city not because it's 'hip.' Their families are here. They need child care, or they need to care for other family members. There are necessary social services here. Their jobs are here. They can't afford cars. Mr. Pinsley fought to stay on the UWS so his son could finish high school there. I applaud Ms. Ledan and Mr. Pinsley for standing up, without shame, and talking about their struggles. After all, most of us are just one medical emergency away from homelessness ourselves.

Its important work what Picture the Homeless is doing. They're trying to get more housing for low-income/poor ppl. Like you said Antonio, they're trying to get those apts. put on the market at low rates.

Mario, you make an important point. i hope that the error is corrected. Paterson ignored that crucial issue. Thanks for this story.
