    Give blood.

Better yet, go with a friend to give blood, and establish a lifetime of donations.

My neighborhood Obama group is organizing a mass volunteer day on MLK day (like Obama groups around the country, I guess) but I really want to make sure it continues throughout the year.

For the past few years, mys sister and i have got each other joke presents--we wrap up something that is an inside joke, usually from our childhood, and put it under the tree. it is really funny to open, ofr each other and also for my parents.

Regarding the charity idea.. i would love my friends to pledge $$ to WNYC in my name. This year i got my salary reduced and due to the economic crisis i couldn't do it for the first time--And i feel TERRIBLE!!! Friends, please listen up!!!

Thanks Brian, your show and WNYC ranks along my top ten things about NYC.

    Happy holidays,

    -e.

It involves spending money, so maybe it doesn't qualify-- but how about buying Fair Trade goods? They are beautiful and some items are inexpensive, and they are environmentally good and they help folks who need the money.

My friends and I are offering "gifts" to each other in this way. We are "committing an act of kindness" to someone in our own community who needs help this year in our friend's name.

DO NOT give money in MY NAME. That puts me on all sorts of mailing lists that get sold and re-sold. Thanks a lot. Grrrr

If people are in the mood to volunteer, RightRides, an organization that drives women, transgender and gender queer people home on Saturday nights between midnight and 3am, always needs drivers, navigators and dispatchers. Their website is www.RightRides.org and the phone number is (718) 522-0822.
