Beyond Bush and Bin Laden

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

Gilles Kepel, professor and chair of Middle East studies at the Institute of Political Studies in Paris and the author of Beyond Terror and Martyrdom: The Future of the Middle East (Belknap Press, 2008), calls for the West and the Middle East to go beyond their current views of each other and to join in one "integrated civilization".

Its too easy for the someone to say we should all join in an integrated civilization.

How would we feel in the west if our countries were war torn, occupied by a foreign army and living in poverty for many years. And then for someone to say "Hey, can't we just integrate?"

I think we would have second thoughts.

What role can France play in creating peace in the Middle East? Is it doing this?

Dr. Kepel said that Al Qaeda is losing support in the Muslim world because they kill so many Muslims. Therefore, is it implied that killing other people would be more acceptable? Would they become more popular if they killed, say Budhists? Or is there a rejection of their methods in general?

You are not allowed to ask that question, Isabel.
