Photo Month: Change for the Better, Change for the Worse
Last week, listeners submitted their photos to the Brian Lehrer Show flickr pool under the theme "Change for the Better, Change for the Worse." There were over almost 350 entries - 25 or so of which will be selected to be part of the Slideluck Potshow presentation at McCarren Park on August 2nd.
Today, author, musician and New Yorker James McBride discusses the submissions, and a look at the stories behind some of the photographs from the BL Listener-Photographers.

I live by Shea Stadium, in Corona, nothing much has changed in the past 30 years. Landlords near the train don't keep up the houses like they should, but I am grateful we don't have lots of high rise condos. I prefer the 2-3 family home structures around me that I live in. They feel like I am in a home. The apartments are so small in NYC. That is my only complaint. I lived upstate NY in a 2000 sq. foot house and now I have a 600 sq. ft. apartment.
i wonder if the bike path one was supposed to be amusing as the cyclist is clearly NOT cycling on the created path. From what I have read about New York's cycling history, bike paths are a fairly new arrival, so a bit amusing that the cyclist has decided to ride next to it instead of on it.
Brian,
How about having people submit photos from their summer vacations and have a contest?
This discussion is reminiscient of Walter Benjamin's cataloging, the the eyes of Baudelaire, all the fleeting loss that occurred during the birth of the modern in 2nd empire Paris.
I was unable to access your slide show....Your website is very confusing and is a sorce of great irritation for me... All I really need is a START button....Thanks. Harriet
Photos can be seen by clicking the link above that says "Highlights from the Change Submissions" And yes, we feel your pain - the WNYC website is getting a revamp in the next few months!

As a New Yorker (and WNYC member!) currently living in Asheville, I can vouch for Brian's positive take on the city. It's a beautiful city with lots of great restaurants, clubs, lounges, galleries, concerts, and theaters, all surrounded by the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains. There's also a large and varied international community here. It will never beat NYC, but it's a true cultural oasis in NC. Hope you'll come check it out for yourself, Brian!
HELP...I loved photo #1 of 16 but where do I click or what do I press to see photos #2etc.
[[At the bottom right there is a "forward" button that should take you to the next photo.]]
I appreciate having my "patch pano" chosen to be in the slide show with the other entries, especially, I like the great photo with the side-by-side new/old buildings, the reflections completing the old building. That's one of the best things about the new buildings, the reflections of their neighbors or the sky.
I'm sorry to not be able to attend the McClarren pool show, I will be out of town on a previously booked vacation. I would've liked to have met the other photographers and listeners.
