Worked till 12am last night and am taking today off to just read and listen to Brian Lehrer show and Thom Hartmann. It's nice doing nothing.

YAY...I am not a student but I am glad 50 students won't be jamming into one car on the #1 at Columbus Circle in the mornings!

Seriously, though, well done NYC students. Have a grand summer and do us proud!

And don't forget to take notes for your "What I Did On Summer Vacation" essay... um... do they still do that... hmmm...dating myself again...

Summer is a perfect time for us NYC public school teachers to catch up with our lives -- cleaning the apartment, making social plans, and travelling...and to decompress from 10 months of stress...

I am a teacher and sitting at my kitchen table nursing a guilt free hang over.I know many NYC teachers partied last night and are doing the same.

After today I am looking forward to doing some household chores I have put off and lots of impromptu short 3-4 day trips this summer.

Just an aside here: I'm not a kid anymore (darn it) but I went to NYC schools in the 50s and 60s and back then the last day of school was June 30 [period] Even if June 30 fell on a Monday, as it does this year we had to go for the full day. Isn't that odd? I'm happy for the kids that it changed.

Although I am not a parent, as a second year teacher in an East NY High School I certainly feel like it at times. Summer vacation is a welcome and relaxing break. However, it causes some apprehension as I worry about the safety of my students until we meet again in September.

Not many people know that Governor's Island is open to the public on weekends. It's a grat visit. There' the ferry ride over. You can take bicycles and ride around all these incredible old buildings and a campus that's like an ivy league college. There are also concerts, national park service ranger tours and so forth on some weekends.

I'm a parent. I and my husband have to work today (damit.)

Our kids are home (ghasp) sleeping late - watching TV - and eating what ever they want in the fridge. Stop tsking - one of them is an 8th grader.
