I was horrified a couple of months ago when a design company's lease was up one weekend and ALL the furniture and fixtures were being crushed. Large design tables on wheels, chairs, filing cabinets, metro shelving. All brand new and perfectly useable and worth a fortune. They had been destroying this stuff for most of the day before I saw it - my neighbours and I salvaged some but I was trying to find Justin's organisation as I had visited it in the past but couldn't remember the name. It really should be illegal to throw out in this way. Do they come and pick up at such short notice - what can we do to stop this kind of waste when we see it. The men doing the crushing were used to it but were happy to recycle it - the super was as upset as we were. Fortunately I live on a street where we all are happy to dive into dumpsters - there is a lot of turnover.
Tess, this happens all the time. When I tried to recycle our furniture, the bldg was up in arms and wanted to charge us for the use of the freight elevator, etc. It was a pretty dismal failure.
There are other organizations out there. I found one that supplied materials to arts organizations via the nyc.gov website. Sorry I don't remember the links.
There are some other good organizations out there to donate reusable materials
