Unraveling Traveling

No, you're not imagining it-- travel today really is more complicated and expensive than it used to be. So today we're kicking off a month-long series on summer travel. Wendy Perrin, consumer news editor at Condé Nast Traveler, talks about where to go this summer, how to avoid the common pitfalls, and how to do it all without breaking the bank.

Brian,

pls address the fact that in this country it's often hard to have a real, meaningful vacation b/c we get so few vacation days a year -- compared to most other countries (where I work I only have 10 vacation days a year and NO sick or personal days..)

this always should be addressed when speaking of vacations -- Americans and everybody working in this country are at a big disadvantage here..

thank you..

Thanks

Can you please have your guest address how, specifically, to go about renting an apartment? Where do you get the information, who do you contact, how do you reserve, etc.?

Marty, please tell us who did that satirical French song you just played, I want to find it!

To answer this vacation question, as a freelancer, the concept of the "summer vacation" is often moot. I usually just take 3-day weekends and drive to beaches accessible by the LI Railroad and ferry. Every other year, I go to Cape Cod for a week with my family. I don't look at the summer as a time to fly anywhere - it's too expensive, and also I don't want to be schlepping around a foreign city when it's super hot out. Overseas vacations (if I can afford them, time or money-wise) I reserve for the spring, when I'm dying to get out of NYC, or in the fall - when the crowds are gone, but it's still warm.

Bogotá or Cartagena, COLOMBIA are couple of the NEW HOTTEST destinations in the Western Hemisphere. These two cities are now SAFE, SECURE and full of culture. Great South American charm combined with first-world standards go a long way as the dollar still goes a long way down there.

Question though, WHY IS WNYC so Euro-Centric when it comes to covering traveling???

Times have now changed, so much Euro-centricity especially when it comes to seeing the world reminds me of the old-days of my parents (kind of boring if you asked me)

If people have difficulty in finding the best prices, why aren't they calling a travel agent.

Many times these travel professionals have access to a lot more sources of information at their fingertips than going to website after website trying to find the best price.

Please ask Wendy - we were thinking Austria - is this going to cost a fortune?

Canceled flights in Asia (at least Singapore Air, Vietnam Air, and a few others) are always compensated and a delay of more than four hours automatic hotel room. This based on my experience.

Just a note - Jet Blue now charges extra for the emergency row seats - I believe its $30.

More Marty Goldensohn! Where has he been -- behind the scenes? Why doesn't he have his own show -- or at least a regular guest host? Love his wry take on things. Bring him back -- or come back -- please!

inquisigal-

song is from the hbo series Flight of the Conchords. They released a musical cd, but I don't think that one is on it.

If you like that song, you'll love the show- I highly recommend you go get the series on dvd.

Congratulations! You are the first radio interviewer whom I've heard pronounce "Conde Nast" correctly. I think the lady has lots of great ideas.

In today's interview, Wendy Perrin mentioned a Web site where air travelers can find specific information about the good and bad points of every passenger seat in a commercial plane if they know the type of plane they will travel on.

I did not fully hear Wendy say the URL address of that Web site. Would like to know it.

Thanks.

Wendy Perrin mentioned a website with fare information. It was something like 'itasoftware'.

I thought I wrote down the correct name but I could not find it. Could you please post the correct name?

Thank you

Francesco
