  I don't know much of Goldwater, I know he is decried as very conservative, but I like what I know of him to the extent he seemed blunt and willing to say things in a direct manner that politicians usually avoid. I don't agree with his politics but he seemed to be a politician of unusual integrity.

  I have often heard him criticized for this quote, "I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!"

  I love that quote. I believe in that quote.

  Gee, that's funny. Whenever I read about the New Deal in history books, it's about it putting people to work helping to build and maintain the country's infra-structure. It was never simply a case of out-and-out welfare. So whatever Goldwater had against the New Deal he seemed to be out of whack making this critique.

  Oh...that was all I needed to hear..Goldwater was scum, the caller was 100% right, this is just right-wing revisionist bs(something this show has become curiously fond of lately). The man should be condemned for that blotch on his record...not have excuses made blaming it on Bork....get a grip...if Goldwater believed in personal responsiblility...then his legacy should be held to HIS OWN standard and he should be rightfully blamed for that HORRIBLE blotch on his legacy. That civil rights laws are "unconstitutional" is the limp impotent last haven argument of ALL racists and bigots.

  Of course Goldwater and McGovern got along.

  McGovern was a B-24 bomber pilot in the US Army Air Forces (served in North Africa.)

  A very interesting interview that suggest a time of greater civility between candidates and cooperation within government when the nations interests are primary.

  The influence of the media and the star satatus of their commentators reduce the political arena to the equivilant of a sports match. To much weight is given to their influence, and not enough critical thought directing the candidates and informing the public or the true issues.

  Media frenzy for ratings may well be the big problem

  Goldwater was a racist? You are an ignorant of history and lack any sense of proportion.

  In september 1964 I moved from Little Neck to just south of Rochester. I was then and am now a card carrying Liberal. I had not transfered my voting registration but not voting didn't seem critical because Johnson seemed a shoo-in.

  As the election came closer my morning drive went past three roadside ads for Johnson that incensed me more and more each day, On election day, I drove back to Little Neck to cast a ballot that I knew would have no effect on the outcome. I voted for Goldwater! I got back in my car and drove the 350 miles back to my home in Lima. The Johnson campaign had insulted the voters with two boards depicting a hand reaching, finger pointed, to button and a third showing a mushroom cloud.

  In the last 100 years there has been no national politician with more personal integrity, ethics and honesty than the late, great Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater. Not one.
