The Brian Lehrer Show

Beyond Bear Mountain and Roger Stone

New York Times columnist Clyde Haberman talks about "the old Albany" as we learn more about Governor Paterson's past. WNYC's political director Andrea Bernstein chimes in to discuss Paterson's first week in office and offers a profile of Roger Stone, the GOP operative who outed Spitzer's illegal activities to the Feds.

Listen to Andrea's piece on Roger Stone.

Haberman: "Sad, but True: Missing the Old Days in Albany"

Patterson is a train wreck.

He's used campaign money to pay for hotels for his affairs.

He's given women he's been romantically involved with money. For what he hasn't said.

Not to mention most if not all of these women are still working for him.

I guess Spitzer taught him a thing or two.

Not to mention he is against raising NY state income tax on people making a million or more a year. Unbelieveable! So he'll raise taxes on the middle class and poor I bet.

Does anyone actually think our politicians of today are any less corrupt and/or hypocritical than those of the past? They were just not as easy to bust in the old days.

Wake up, my friends. These are our peers we're electing. They're just as hypocritical, lecherous, greedy, ambitious and prone to fall from grace as every single one of us out here. Look at your friends, look at your neighbors. Who is perfect among us?

Nobody is above the law, and nobody is immune to al the weaknesses of humanity either. Some of us go too far, others stay within the limits of decency. That's life.

I heard Andrea Bernstein's reporting about Roger Stone earlier today on Morning Edition. So why is this all coming out now? Something must be done about the herd journalism mentality that pervades the media today. Everyone goes after the same story -- everyone swallows the same party line. Where is the original reporting? Where is the digging behind what seems obvious? It seems that despite Spitzer's failings in his own scandal -- there is more to this story than meets the eye.

I think he got it out and there it is. Right Andrea, no digging and letting it look even worse. It's a distraction as long as the media keep it out there! Get it?

Are you all in the media who stand so righteous and above it all so perfect that you point the finger to these, yes sleazy horrible politicos, but I want to know your stories. How about that you moralize and I want to know what all of you do in the late of night!!! You can't stand on the moral side and be doing the same thing you point your finger at others for doing. I don't have a problem that you report the story but the constant moralizing, and finger-pointing is beyond journalism.

What's the cutoff year -- or age -- at which a politician is considered a bit off if he says he did *not* smoke a bit of pot? 1968? 25?
