When the Spitzer story broke in the afternoon -- hadn't Brian just announced he was going to take off the next day (day of ES announcement)? BL are you now trying to alter the hands of your fate (of taking off and missing huge stories)?
So, the House held an "unusual closed-door session to talk about classified intelligence..." obviously that means it was off the record BUT can't they still ask those present whether the session, in their opinions, SHOULD HAVE been off the record?
Surely I am not the only one who suspects that very few deep, dark secrets -- no aha moments -- were revealed that clinched the case for bolstering the case for FISA. I'd at least want to hear the Prez candidates response to "Did the case laid out for FISA truly merit this shield of secrecy"?
(oops that question was meant for your FISA segment)
i would like to hear some reporting on how much money we are going to be paying ex-governor spitzer for services rendered while he was governor.
Under the radar story:
The Vietnamese government, which has continued to war against so called Montagnard ethnic minorities who inhabit a "Palestine" sized part of central Vietnam and supported the Americans during the war there, sent a delegation to America's largest exiled Montagnard community, in North Carolina. The Vietnamese came to see the Montagnards but not actually meet any of them -- so they were shocked to have been met in this rural area by protest. Those protesters, who in Vietnam also practice Christianity (another problem for the govt.), have been following the delegation around the country with their protests, to the surprise of many involved, who thought we were "past all that." (article link: http://tinyurl.com/23kgc2)
Here's a story that is always kicking yet never reported except locally or by NGOs -- either here or in Vietnam.
There is a Women's Reproductive Rights bill that New York is looking to pass that will protect women's rights in NY state regardless of what happens with the Supreme Court of the US.
This is a landmark bill and an important advancement to women's rights. This is worth more attention than it has been given. I hope this proposed legislation will be passed.
I would love to hear details about comment #6. That would be great if it's true and had a chance of passing!
There is still a war in Iraq, which polling shows is disappearing in the minds of many, if not most, Americans.
#8 -- ah, right, that.
How about Congress suing the administration over their refusal to testify before Congress in the prosecutors issue?
#8 and #9
I think I heard once something about us being involved in a place called Afghanistan...apparently we have troops there? Something to do with something called 9/11? I dunno...heard that once but don't really hear much about it....
The recent protests in Tibet are particularly interesting because people within Tibet do not usually mark the anniversary of the 1959 uprising (March 10) with public acts.
There was a news article in the Daily Telegraph about the mass killing of cats as part of the clean-up process before the olympic games.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/worldnews.html?in_article_id=528694&in_page_id=1766&ito=1490
I'm not sure if there's been any comment on the inhumane treatment of animals!
has anyone seen the BBC special where they say Al Qeda doesn't exist...
The former treasurer for the National Republican Congressional Committee diverted hundreds of thousands of dollars -- and possibly as much as $1 million -- of the organization's funds into his personal accounts, GOP officials said yesterday, describing an alleged scheme that could become one of the largest political frauds in recent history.
Hundreds of veterans and active duty soldiers of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are gathering today for the Winter Soldier hearings. The soldiers plan to give eyewitness accounts of the occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Organized by Iraq Veterans Against the War, the gathering is modeled after the 1971 Winter Solider hearings organized by the Vietnam Veterans Against the War.
There are increasingly violent protests occurring in Lhasa, Tibet...

Dan Eggen reports for The Washington Post, "The FBI has increasingly used administrative orders to obtain the personal records of US citizens rather than foreigners implicated in terrorism or counterintelligence investigations, and at least once it relied on such orders to obtain records that a special intelligence-gathering court had deemed protected by the First Amendment, according to two government audits released yesterday."
Today is Pi Day..... 3-14

It's pretty lowbrow, but there was a woman stuck to a toilet seat for two years- her skin started to grow around it. Creepy!
It turned out that Obama won Texas..so based on Bill Clinton the race should be over eh?

There's a genocide in Darfur that is threatening to spill into Chad
Not much has been discussed regarding the the 720 houses the Israeli goverment has announced to build in the west bank. Disrupting the negotiations for peace.
Hi Brian, howzabout talking about the Michigan and Florida primary/delegate snafu and what this means for the division within the Demo party, and how that will affect them versus the Republicans in November.
OK, this isn't exactly recent news but it's an issue that I think about, a lot. The U.S. alone throws away something like 100 BILLION plastic bags per year. There needs to be a massive public awareness campaign to alert citizens to this issue. I propose levying a tax or a charge on each bag like they do in other countries which results in people bringing their own bags from home. Our society is so wasteful and it amazes me how many people just don't think about this issue, and every day I see people shopping with 3 or 4 bags, buy one small item, and get yet another bag. Consolodate, bring your own bags, and think!
General Petraeus announced that the surge had been a failure.

I think something is wrong with your web-streaming, I can't listen to the show on my computer. HELP!

why do you keep saying that Sandra Day O'Connor is an "infamous" figure?

HJC lawsuits against Bush Administration seems to have disappeared.
Aren't there drugs in our drinking water? Let's talk about that!
this week the chief of police of Teheran was forced to resign after being fought in a police raid on a brothel

I was following the news regarding the diplomatic resolution to the tensions among 3 Andean countries over the territorial sovereignty violation of Ecuador by Colombian president Uribe.
In a meeting of LatinAmerican leaders in Dominican Republic, the great majority of leaders condemned Colombia's aggression which was based on the American-created principle of invading any country that could "harbor terrorists".
Pres. Uribe had to apologize to the entire region, and Ecuador and Venezuela committed to be more aware of their borders.

The Westchester Symphonic Winds will perform its 20th anniversary gala concert at 8pm on May 10th at the Tarrytown Music Hall. This is my 19th year with the group. I am its principal trombone player.
According to a report released by the Southern Poverty Law Center last week. Hate groups have increased by 48% since 2000. In 2007, they documented 888 hate groups, a new record.
The FBI should start paying more attention to these potential domestic terrorist groups.

Here is some coverage of the tent city in Los Angeles from the LA Times:

this is the video feed link for the BBC report the lady just talked about
I'm as disappointed that Admiral Fallon resigned as I was when Colin Powell didn't question the "intelligence" presented at the UN hearings during the march to war. If our military officers can't speak freely, we're in trouble.
Regarding the BBC report on the Tent City

Check out the story of Chantal Sébire, in France, who is seeking the right to terminate her life with the assistance of a physician. Her illness is incurable and quite visible, so her campaign to change the law (which currently prohibits this type of euthanasia) is bound to become a very recognizable landmark in the history of this issue, not just in France but here as well.

Admiral Fallon resigns
brian--
why do you keep repeated the words "obsessed" and "obsessing" --at least a dozen times so far this hour--to describe the citizenry's insistence on unearthing the details and roots of Spitzer's misconduct, which we need to know in order to decrease the likelihood of being victimized by another hypocritical criminal of his kind?
throughout this business you've apparently being trying to shield Spitzer, even playing up absurd conspiracy theories to take the heat off him. what kind of connection do you have with Spitzer that causes this bias in your coverage?

On March 11, 2008, Admiral Fallon announced his "resignation" from CENTCOM and retirement, citing administrative complications caused in part by an article in Esquire Magazine, which described him as the only thing standing between the Bush Administration and war with Iran.
Can someone post the name of the drug the caller mentioned? The one intended for addiction but useful for auto-immuno deficiency? I heard "trekzone" but I know that can't be right...
A physician just called in and mentioned the new use of a medicine in the treatment of people with auto-immune diseases. I missed the info and tried to google it to no avail. I'd like to find the name of the drug and the report on the clinical trials at Penn State to relay to a family member with multiple sclerosis. Any help is appreciated! ~Thank you.
I am interested in learning about the auto-immune deug referred to by one of the callers. Can you give me info about the spelling of the drug in question... drexon??
Yes, please someone list the name of the drug that can be taken in small doses to increase the auto-immune system.
I too would like the name of the auto-immune drug for a friend suffering badly with colitis--wearing diapers & getting up during the night many times. Your male caller named colitis in his list of auto-immune diseases helped by this drug.
Many thanks
interested in the drug that was mentioned by the physician for autoimmune diseases.
i think brian should followup on this.
I think its trexone, but not sure. I'd like more info on this as well.
"you're" not "your" under the radar
let's hear liberal WNYC talk about sound bites from Obama'a pastor's sermons as were broadcast yesterday evening on FOX, comments such as "God can't bless America, God hates America". Comments that it is a fact that Washington DC developed the AIDS virus, and on and on. This is critical news about the current campaign!
trexone. Thanks James.
The drug is naltrexone. I've been on it since 1991. It works and it is a very important drug that deserves more media coverage.
I too would like info on the drug for auto-immune disorders and the clinical trials report mentioned by the physician. a family member has active ulcerative colitis which has been resistant to all treatmemt
I also wanted more info on the auto-immune drug. I believe that the website that the caller mentioned is http://www.lowdosenaltrexone.org/. If not, I would love to hear what that website actually is. [BL Producer Note: I've corrected the above URL. Yes, this is the website the caller mentioned on the air. Audio for the segment will be up soon.]
Thanks to Michael Broder for the name of the drug for auto-immune disorders. Interesting, isn't it, that we are having so many auto-immune problems these days? I'll google it.
Thanks for the show.
Thanks for the name of the drug. Found the low-dose home page for those interested:
http://www.lowdosenaltrexone.org/
I AM INTERESTED IN THE EXACT NAME OF THE DRUG
HELPFUL WITH AUTO-IMMUNE DISEASES.PLEASE E-MAIL TO ME, A LONGTIME SUPPORTER,
BY THE WAY BRIAN I WAS DISAPPOINTED WITH YOUR CAVALIER ATTITUDE TOWARDS THIS CALLER WITH INFORMATION THAT MAY BE OF GREAT IMPORTANCE TO A GREAT MANY PEOPLE. YOU'RE GREATLY RESPECTED BY MANY-TRY TO KEEP IT THAT WAY! WHILE I'M AT IT. WNYC HAS NOW BECOME TOO SIMILAR TO A COMMERCIAL STATION WITH TOO MANY "ADS" DISGUISED AS "SUPPORT" MENTIONS.
Why do we hear nothing about/see none of the rants of Rev. Jeremiah Wright?
Admiral William Fallon
I was on air with my news on the victory march held this past Wednesday by the community coalition group, Community in Unity. We were celebrating the failed jail expansion plan at Oak Point in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx. I want to elaborate briefly on my statement by saying that as a member of Rights for Imprisoned People with Psychiatric Disabilities the call is to push for plans and monies for alternatives to incarceration (ATIs) for people with psychiatric disabilities that are instead being jailroaded into the criminal justice system.
Whooping cough is making a comeback. Adolescents & young adults whose vaccinations have worn off get it most often, but babies who haven't had the full series of vaccinations yet who are most likely to die from it. More info in lay language is at MedicineNet (http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=53724). The most important thing is for adolescents & adults to keep getting booster shots every 10 years, because the babies catch it from them. I've heard little about this in the media, including public radio.
And for DAVID, the exact name of the drug is "naltrexone." A couple of people already mentioned it above.
mgdu, Look at this long list of stories that could more constructively be talked about than a zipper problem! if you haven't noticed, a good many males the world over, in power and not, have zipper problems. This will never change! We need to decriminalize prostitution to protect everyone from diseases that happen whether or not you see it as criminal.
Naltrexone is an opioid receptor antagonist and while it may be very helpful for certain conditions & specific patient profiles, it should not be taken lightly (either figuratively or literally.) For some complaints, the side effects can be worse than the problem. It is not a cure-all -- proceed with caution.
All:
I have MS and very interested ( like all of you ) in the drug mentioned by the call this morning. Here is what I found:
http://www.lowdosenaltrexone.org/
http://www.hmc.psu.edu/cellbiology/faculty/index.htm
http://www.thecompounder.com/msnaltrexonetrials.php
good luck to all.
Thanks to all of you who provided additional information about the auto immune drug -- much appreciated.
