The Brian Lehrer Show

Coaching through Controversy

C. Vivian Stringer, head coach of the Rutgers University Women's Basketball Team and the author of Standing Tall: A Memoir of Tragedy and Triumph (Crown, 2008), tells her story -- from coal-miner's daughter to first black woman to coach a Division I team through the Don Imus controversy.

When Imus called the team a bunch of nappy headed hoes, it was on the same day he called his wife "the green hoe" and said the word hoe probably 20 times. HIs wife is into environmentally safe cleaning products. The word nappy is used in standup comic routines regularly. The mistake he made was not coming on immediately and responding to windbag charlatans like Sharpton, that the show is a comedy show, he was using "rap" language, and people could go kiss his derriere. THAT was the proper response. Not the groveling cowtowing and eternal apologies that have turned him into a slithering detonated meaningless radio geezer.

Imus should have been fired and remained fired not hired back for more money basically rewarding his ignorant remarks.

However I think the most effective response would have been if Vivian Stringer simply said Imus should be fired because he's an idiot and forget the Sharpon media spectacle. The spectacle makes it seems as if Ms. Stringer wants attention.

However I'm a white male who has seen little or no racial discrimination or racisim.

Perhaps you can tell me where in labor law there's an equation between as you say "being an idiot" and a legal basis for firing?

Billy Bob I hate to brake the news to you but CBS MSNBC can fire Imus for anything they want at any time. They don't need cause.

Obliviously they had cause because anyone in their right mind would not refer to people as "nappy headed Hoes".

A broadcaster will get fired for the slightest thing these days right or wrong that's the way it is.

Maybe it's good there is more sensitivity today than in the 50's.

Well the truth is that Imus has said a lot worse in his day, hes a bigoted old fool, and not funny.

But picking on a group of overachieving college girls...? He deserved all the flack he received, mainly because they deserved so much better. They were under-aged, amateurs, not Rich spoiled celebretons like Britney and Lindsay Lohan.

Coach Stringer is the best. Not only is she a great coach but she cares about her student athletes and prepares them for life not just basketball.

I am very inspired by c. Vivian Stringer. I am encouraged by her strength after losing her husband young to a heart attack. My own husband is young and very ill and I fear what will become of me, you have given me inspiration that life will still go on and I can still accomplish great things in life even if I am alone.

Best of luck to you.

I take back what I say Vivian Stringer is an extraordinary person and Imus deserved far more than he received and shouldn't be on the air.

There's also a difference between calling his own wife a "green" ho and those girls "nappy headed" hos...there is a racial aspect to it obviously, especially considering where it came from (white male "entertainer" of the establishment)

I agree Imus has said a lot worse. Same old garbage, he gets in trouble and months later it doesn't matter. World keeps spinning.

But uh...Imus was a "slithering old geezer" way before this.

As for the statement that it seemed that Ms.Stinger "wanted attention"...well I suppose if you think anyone speaking out against racism "just wants attention" that would make sense (a racist notion in itself!) Seemed to me fairly obvious that she was just fighting back and sticking up for her team.

This has never been addressed: Imus' were the very words of a rap song from about 1996 -- "Jealous Again," Kane and Able. Imus left out even worse:

"So crappy headed nappy headed hoes get back

"Cause it's a 10 to 1 chance that you might get smacked"

http://www.lyricsdemon.com/133056/kane-and-able/jealous-again/

In context, they were talking about tattoos. If you get yourself tatted up so you can look cheap and hard-core and street-tough, then don't get all "Oh my goodness!" when someone refers to you humorously in the language of the street.

George Carlin says: If your child needs a role-model, and you're not it, you're both in trouble.

I believe it.

(real quote is: If your child needs a role-model, and you're not it, you're both f@#ked.)

Ms Stringer is such a great guest. I know she's trying to sell a book, but I enjoyed hearing more about her. Forget about Imus!

It seemed to me that at the end of your interview with Coach Stringer you left her with the impression that it was Don Imus (or his surrogate) who made the remark about "Barack Hussein Obama". This is absolutely not true. He was in no way involved in that. Don Imus is not responsible for what is said on other shows on WABC. He has made great efforts to mend his ways and address race relations and continues to do a very entertaining and thought-provoking show. You have done him a great disservice. Perhaps that was your intention?

I can understand joann's point. It did seem as if Stringer misunderstood the question, but then she briefly referred to "the company" Imus is now keeping, clarifying that she knew Imus was not connected to the Kenya garb issue, etc.

Which company, in their lies and misstatements, seems far, far more offensive and even evil and worthy of outrage than Imus' comment.

I saw a man on 60" last week, otherwise seemingly intelligent and even sympathetic, who had "heard" Obama was a secret Muslim.

These propaganda-spewers depend on the fact that not everyone has the time and resources to track down every media-emblazoned lie.

Maybe if the media didn't get all hysterical about some shock-jock's joke, we'd get more real coverage exposing truly egregious swill like this.

So let me get this straight nappy bad, green ok? That makes no sense. What do you mean he picked on them? He made an off the cuff comment. Your overreaction bespeaks volumes about your own racism. Imus is a comedian. Get over it. And protect the first ammendment while you're at it. Someone should transcript everything he ever said off the cuff using a variety of "Lingo." That you jumped on this one extemporaneous statement and turned it into somekind of premeditated racist barb is ridiculous. At least be fair and list all the things he ever said. I believe the show is supposed to be funny.......

There's nothing funny about Imus's show. He's a hack comedian who doesn't know when his days are over.

We live less than ten minutes from the Rutgers Athletic Center, and get to several games a year. We go for the basketball, which is great, but perhaps even more important to me is for my 10 year old daughter to see the incredible role models on the court, Coach Stringer's players.

I'm curious to know if all the self-professed first amendment defenders would happily apply that "standard" if one of those players were their daughter, reduced to human detritus by the calculations of a national radio voice.
