Unemployed listeners call in on how job-hunting is influencing candidate-picking.

I was told by my employer that George W. Bush was the reason I lost my job.

I was a graphic designer at a fashion company.

I like Obama, but I also like McCain. I think our country needs someone who can go across the aisle and really bring fundamental change. Being unemployed hasn't changed my mind but has made the issue more urgent.

Interested in speaking to William, former Guiliani Volunteer Coordinator.

Launching a political social media site, politics-360.com. May be a fit.

    Thanks,

I've been umemployed for two months. I have basic office skills, yet I've have written unsold screenplays, short stories and novellas. Anyone who gets the Democratic nomination for president gets my vote.

Contact me at Madbandit20002000@yahoo.com, if you have a job in the publishing/TV/film industry.

I am a freelance communications consultant and brand strategist, and I have had no work since early December. . . so I have been volunteering all my free time for John Edwards. I went to New Hampshire and I phonebank from NYC, and I organize local events and work the blogs for my candidate.

If anyone needs a guy like me with over a decade of experience, drop a comment at one of my blogs (start here: http://guy2k.blogspot.com/ )

    Hi Brian,

I'm recently unemployed - I was working as a relationship manager selling limited distribution research to institutional investors. It was a start up and simply wasn't bringing in money. I was "let go" with 4 others. I'm reorganizing and rethinking my career path. I'm 35. I'm voting for Obama, but I really like Edwards (just don't think he can win). Since I've been umemployed, I've been able to listen to WNYC all day, everyday! Maybe, I'll come in there and see if I can lend a hand somehow. I promise that when I do get a job, I'll donate more money to the station.

    Good Luck!

i am 23 years old and have been unemployedfor 3 months; i recently returned to the States after 14 months of teaching english to adults in china. i want to work at a non-profit, preferably a think tank. i'm an independent, but i will vote for a candidate who offers national health insurance, because without a job i understand how risky it is to get sick or get in an accident without insurance

  • [7] Ruth Klein from NYC January 24, 2008 - 10:56AM

My sister, and all the people she works with, have lost their jobs due to the writers' strike:

unlike the writers, they do not have support coming in. When I hear or read of efforts to help the writers during this time, it pains me that so many more people who've been seriously impacted are ignored.

So: thanks for these few minutes!

The only candidates speaking to the economic situation of workers are Edwards and Kucinich.

As long as corporations hold the strings... this "reverse Robin Hood policy"

of take from the poor and give to the wealthy will continue.

Obama is a Rorschach image. People project on him whatever fantasy that feels good.

    Brian

Thanks for having me on; it was a pleasure. I'm a recent graduate from Rutgers and are looking for an analyst position at a finance firm. I excelled at Goldman Sachs and have several references who are full time employees. Thanks for your help.

    My email is whurst@pegasus.rutgers.edu

    Cheers

If people consider Obama and McCain to be similar choices, you must not be doing your job Brian.

Just because they are both thought to be independent does not mean they are similar. McCain is pro gun and anti-choice. All you have to do to be a moderate Republican now is to be against torture and support campaign finance reform.

And Obama hasn't said much of anything of substance so who knows what he thinks.

Brian - Educate us better as to what these candidates actually believe and support.

  • [11] Mike from NYC January 24, 2008 - 11:26AM

I was just laid off from my job as the content editor and event director at a community radio station. My position was eliminated due to an ever-tightening budget -- A problem which faces many non-profits now and which is definitely exacerbated by our worsening economy. In the Presidential realm, my support falls strongly in favor of Obama because his ideas represent an environment in which cause-oriented organizations can be successful.

  • [12] william suarez from NYC January 24, 2008 - 11:29AM

    Thanks for taking my call...

I am a seasoned office manager, with experience directing a non profit program. For years, organizations have asked me to make resources go further by building coalitions and by building personal capacity in the people under my supervision.

Strong written and verbal skills- can speak to large groups and motivate all types of people.

  • [14] Coco Martinez from Tribeca January 24, 2008 - 11:31AM

My husband lost his job in printing about three years ago. So many of the old printing companies are gone now because of outsourcing. We lost our health care at that point, and he had to start a new career from scratch at age 50. I have also just lost my job a couple of months ago. We are being swallowed by debt.I blame the Republicans for the utter destruction of our country and what it means to be American. All the billions that have been sunk into Iraq could have been invested in the crumbling infrastructure of this country and provided lots of good jobs...I am a Visual Merchandising Manager with a great resume. It looked like I was about to get a wonderful job-but now it seems that it's on hold. Too bad, because it is a European company it's health benefits went into effect immediately. I feel so bleak. I can't wait for the Democrats to get in and reverse all the disgraceful decisions made by Bush. I will vote for Obama.

    Coco

  • [16] James from New York City January 24, 2008 - 12:02PM

    Dear Sir,

I found your segment somewhat disingenuous, as one could be lead to believe that you would help the unemployed.

To wit, I am a writer with sveral years of experience in composing such diverse genres as screenplays (commercial and documentary), books, articles (on politics, economics and food).

If anyone is interested, I can be contacted at soferbemet@aol.com.

    Many thanks.

    Sincerely,

    James

I was laid off after 14 years of working for an insurance brokerage company. I was a Business Analyst in the techonology dept. - essentially a liaison between the insurance brokers and computer programmers.

I am looking for a career change. I am open to many ideas - but would prefer not to manage people or sell.

In relation to this topic, I am still undecided, but agree with the Democratic candidates who want to end tax advantages for outsourcing. I have seen many people lose their jobs as a result of outsourcing. (This is one of the factors that has encouraged me to change fields.)

I lost my Entertainment Payroll job when my company, Axium International, entered Chapter 7 bankruptcy on Jan. 8. The company was not a victim of the Writer's Strike or the flagging economy. Our company's owners, according to the court papers drafted against them, used Axium as their "personal piggybank," failing to pay a host of creditors, including the IRS. Axium was not distressed in any way and distributed $3B in business in 2007. Now 400 jobs in two hemispheres have been lost and thousands of people working in film, TV and theatre are holding worthless paychecks. This is a continuing story affecting hundreds of New Yorkers that is underreported. My healthy, stable job is now gone; perhaps some vigorous regulation could have prevented this implosion. I will vote Democratic at every opportunity this year. I am looking for work in Finance, Writing, Editing and Graphic Art. My Yahoo email is: mkeating47@yahoo.com
