I think all the Presidential candidates have a very superficial understanding of the situation in the ground in Pakistan.
They seem to be outdoing each other in pandering to the American public and saying whatever needs to be said to make it seem as if they are strong on terrorism.
My favorite of course was Huckabee who made it seem like illegal Pakistani immigrants were pouring over the border!
Muslim father "thing" ?
Brian just said that Obama's mother was an African-American. She wasn't; she was white.
ombama belongs to a "black nationalist church"
what does that mean?
You can't change Pakistan unless you change the economics of the country. May I suggest a book called "Military Inc., Inside Pakistan's Military Economy" by Ayesha Siddiqa.
This is not something that any of the USA political candidates can do. Maybe we can provide development aid that can provide incentives for the creation of strong civilian institutions.
But that is about it.
And, the areas where Bin Landin is hiding have always been quasi independent even during the days of British rule.
Also, Hillary gets an "F" when it comes to pakistan:
I am surprised that Brian didn't ask the guest about this:
Video: Smartest woman in the world doesn’t know the first thing about Pakistan

"Muslim father 'thing'" as asked above...exactly, Brian Lehrer et.al....this needs to be discussed in more depth. Without commenting on Obama at all, Islam considers the father's religion controlling, so aetheist or not, Obama's father was Muslim, and raised Christian or not, it considers Obama a Muslim. You don't get to convert. So, there is a question as to whether, should Obama be elected, of how the Islamic world, or at least some segments of it, will view him, and his policies, and the U.S. Could this have any consequences, be a problem, etc.????, given the realities of related terror etc. issues today?
Ironically the entire perception of most of the American Presidential candidates is based on a few lopsided US media stories. Little wonder why they give such ridiculous comments on various events occuring here. We are facing the direct brunt of terrorism, our soldiers and civilians are getting killed and yet most of these supposed presidential hopefuls think that we have not done enough. It is really painful to hear what one hears.
