Make Way for Imus

Friday, November 02, 2007

Civil rights attorney and, until yesterday, WABC Radio host Ronald Kuby is no longer on the air as the station makes way for its new morning host, Don Imus.

Rutgers women's basketball has been the most successful sport at Rutgers for as long as I can remember -- since the early eighties at least. Rutgers women's basketball has been highly respected and highly ranked for years. That's also why the women's basketball coach gets paid higher than football and other sports.

  • [2] Melissa from Bronx November 02, 2007 - 11:30AM

Aggreed...as an RU grad (89, and a varsity athlete, I am very familiar with the basketball program...it is the one sport where RU has a national level program. The coach deserves to be paid well for the success of this program...

I THINK THE REMOVAL OF CURTIS AND KUBY IS JUST DISPICABLE AND SPEAKS TO THE COMPLETE BOTTOM LINE MENTALITY WHICH PERVADES MEDIA NOW.

I LIKED THE WAY THE TWO OPPOSITES MANAGED TO GET ALONG FOR A WHILE. I LOVED RON'S GIGGLE AND SENSE OF HUMOR AS WELL AS HIS INTELLIGENT ANALYSIS OF NEWS STORIES. CURTIS WAS TOLERABLE

WITH RON'S BENEVALENCE. I WON'T SUPPORT WABC OR THEIR ADS UNTIL THEY RESTORE THE SHOW. I JUST E-MAILED THEM WITH THESE COMMENTS. THANKS BRIAN FOR AIRING OF THE ISSUES OF THE DAY .

i am very upset on the way wabc dismissed ron kuby. i was a big fan of the program and the ying/yang of kuby and curtis.

  • [5] Bruce November 02, 2007 - 01:56PM

Ron Kuby was well aware since August of the writing on the wall. In my opinion he was the boring side of Curtis and Kuby.

He has a very lucrative job as a Civil Rights attorney, and other then the vanity aspect of his talk show, he is not very interesting.

Sliwa is and will remain with WABC in New York.

    Good Luck Mr. Kuby.

  • [6] Maggie from NJ November 02, 2007 - 07:33PM

I am infuriated by the firing of Ron Kuby. He will be greatly missed. I am hopeful that he and Mr. Sliwa will be hired as a duo at another NY radio station. The management at WABC is shortsighted and really wrong on this. I will no longer be listening to WABC.

  • [7] Warren B. from Metuchen, NJ November 02, 2007 - 10:04PM

Brilliant move by WABC to fire one of, if not the most, articulate and informed voices on NY morning radio. Good luck with your new personality whose remarks not only offend the tri-state but are just stupid. Most of all that just makes for boring radio.

I am a political conservative. I have found Ron's sense of humor, ability to laugh at himself, and ability to translate complex topics to something easily understood by the lay person to be unique on the airways. I didn't always agree..but I was always informed.

Curtis and Kuby became part of my family over the past 8 years waking us up daily. They were there for 9/11, countless snow storms, election results, etc....There is a great trust that is generated in that role.

WABC totaly disregarded this relationship in the childish way they terminated Ron. Listeners be damned.

Good luck with the advertiser's WABC because you now have one less family listening to the morning show in NJ.

Way to adhere to your "Promise Keeper" values with regards to dismissing Kuby as it reportedly went down Phil.

I realize to the degree Citadel may have forced the change on wabc (locally) your hands may have been tied, but there are more gracious ways to commence audience clensing, this was truly a stab in the back from a person I once believed to be a fair and honorable person.

Rest assured along with a handful of others, there will be one less listener to WABC as of Friday, November 2nd, not just to morning drive, but overall throughout the day.

    A very disappointed former listener,

    ~JT~

  • [9] KK November 03, 2007 - 01:30PM

I too listened to Curtis and Kuby and only C & K on WABC. I found Curtis shrill with another host so I think his chemistry won't work with other hosts at WABC--he's much better with a foil. It's a shame; they kept each other civil and informative.

Hope Ron finds a new home. I would follow Ron to another morning show--preferrably with a similar format. I also listened to Imus before because of the political guests but find Morning Joe superior to Imus on MSNBC.

I think they'll lose listeners but time will tell.

  • [10] Rich from Sloatsburg, NY November 03, 2007 - 02:55PM

I am an Independent vote, leaning to the Right. I must admit I agreed with Ron about 30 to 40 percent of the time.

When it was rumored that Imus was taking over ABC morning I Emailed Phil Boyce and told him years ago I listened to Imus when he was funny. When he became political or serious, the show dragged. I have not listened to him in years.

My only suggestion is Curtis & Kuby to a reverse John Gambling and go to WOR.

  • [11] Lynn from NJ November 03, 2007 - 06:42PM

Radio does not need another "shock jock" which is all that Imus is. Whether you agreed with them or not on any particular subject, Curtis & Kuby were always entertaining. While I usually disagreed with Ron, it was interesting to hear him analyze a subject so that, while you might not change your opinion, you did hear another side of a story. Imus may have been around for 40 years, but that is only because he doesn't know when to lay down and die. He has been a "has been" for years - trading on his past glories. I wish Curtis, John, Sean, Rush and the rest would get up and leave. . . the writing is on the wall for them also.

  • [12] Patrick Lozito from Copiague, NY November 03, 2007 - 09:13PM

Dear Kuby, I can't stand you politics and I love you. I could set my watch (7:12AM) when you would answer Curtis with a far-left opinion and I'd have to change the station, although not for long, to lower my blood pressure. Ron, all the Best!

  • [13] hank gent from Little Falls NJ November 04, 2007 - 09:31PM

Ron ,i am another listener who may disagree with you at times, but you taught me how to listen to the other side, abc no class, no loyalty no more listen. I will now listen to boomer and Carton on the fan 660 imus old spot.Ron you will be missed Phil is this how Christians do it. Hire those that use our Lords name in vain often? you hhad a choice to to stand up or trust and leave he will provide

  • [14] Fran from New Jersey November 05, 2007 - 09:54AM

I'm absolutely done with ABC; I've listen to

Curtis and Kuby since the very beginning.

When I heard the news that Ron was leaving, I

guess I was in denial. What a disgrace!!!!!!!!

I would never listen to imus; for what???

Hopefully, Ron and Curtis will reappear

    SOON.

  • [15] Jeanne from NYC November 05, 2007 - 11:40AM

Our a.m. radio wakeup will also be on the road with the loss of Kuby. Nobody is able to explain the most complicated issues so brilliantly. We will follow Kuby whereever he lands...and hope that it is in the a.m., when we are not at work, so we can hear him. He was great with Curtis, but Curtis alone, or with the others he's matched with, doesn't cut it.

  • [16] L.A. Mahoney from New York November 05, 2007 - 02:31PM

WABC just lost another listener. I am really hoping that Ron Kuby will find another place on the radio. I stopped listening to Imus years ago and didn't even know he was still on until his ugly drama. But WABC apparently only wants to cater to the extreme right-wing hate voices.

Please, Ron Kuby, hurry and get another radio show.

  • [17] Alan Inzlicht from New York November 05, 2007 - 02:35PM

When you listen to a conservative or liberal talk show host you usually get half of the whole story plus a great spin on it. But with WNYC and with Ron Kuby on WABC, people would have this great opportunity to understand whats really going on. By the time Ron was leaving WABC he changed and adjusted alot of Conservatives listeners opinions, and even some WABC talk show hosts like John Gambling. making them think more critically about everything even on the most conservative issues. We will miss him dearly. See you at the trial of Osama Bin Ladin when you will probably be the one defending Osama Bin Ladin...

  • [18] david November 05, 2007 - 03:36PM

i've been a loyal WABC listener for about 5 years. I can't believe the only liberal host (who i generally disagree with, but for whom i have great respect) gets replaced by this ridiculous has-been.

    talk about lowest common denominator.

i won't be listening to WABC any longer

I was out of town for several days and just found out about the dismissal of Ron Kuby. How sad for the New York audience. I too enjoyed the give and take between Ron and Curtis and thought Ron's analysis of complex problems very helpful. What will happen to our beloved country if we silence people who stand up for what they believe in.

We are a great nation chiefly because we have the freedom to hear contrasting ideas expressed freely. Read your history Americans and realize that our founding fathers had many different opinions and were not shy about expressing them.

I hope Ron finds another niche and when he does, I'll be one of his listeners.

WABC has gone down into the gutter. With the departure of Ron Kuby, it has now geared towards the lowest common denominator. Every morning drive-time radio show, from Howard Stern to Joan Hamburg, has beat Imus in the ratings. It is bad enough ABC fired Lynn Samuels a few yeas ago, now this. Thank goodness I have Sirius, where I can enjoy Lynn and Howard.

  • [21] D Tillyer from Manhattan November 06, 2007 - 02:49PM

I was very disappointed that Imus was taken off the air in such a self-righteous manner. He was always edgy and sometimes boorish. His staff was always boorish. When I was offended by them, I would just hit the car radio button. However, Imus' intelligent (though, aw shucks) manner of interviewing political and literary guests was always a joy. He went on many rants, but he had (I thought) a loyal stable of commentators that he could always call on. I wonder how he will deal with those who so quickly turned their backs on him.

As for Ron Kuby, I came to really appreciate him after I was denied listening to Imus. I had always avoided him because of his clownish companion, but I discovered they worked well together. I will miss Kuby and his incisive explanations of legal issues.

    It's been an interesting adventure.

Two years ago, I lost the CBS TV early morning radio show, and finding nothing left on TV to keep me awake at 5am, finally landed on Curtis and Kuby.

Fortunately for me, I've now retired so it's not as important for me to receive my morning jolt of laughs. Saddest of all is the lame duck Curtis and whoever show that apparently awaits the Imus entourage. I've nothing against Imus but I likely will find something local to drink my coffee to.

WABC is truly the bastion of the old, the rigid, the conservative, and the drab.

  • [23] Camillo LoGiudice from NYC November 15, 2007 - 02:12PM

I am outraged that WABC is taking off the most entertaining show on morning radio and installing one of the most pompous, boring, and over-the-hill radio jocks. I can't take more than one minute of Imus before I change the channnel. I'm going to truly miss Curtis, Ron, Warner, and all the other members of what eventually became a my morning family. My only hope is that the entire C&K crew find a new morning spot. Goodbye WABC!

  • [24] Albert from NYC November 30, 2007 - 09:57AM

I'm elated that Rony Kuby is gone. He sucked. Too bad about Curtis though. Don Imus is a boring, ugly old lady. I did however like his "nappy-headed ho" remark.
