I'm the guy who called up and asked Mr. Gingerich about his party's attack on science. I thought his answer was no answer at all. I was respectful and he refused to answer the question.
The Republicans want the riches from technology, but are attacking competent scientists who don't drink their kool-aid on evolution, the age of the earth, geology, and climate change.
Science won't be there to rescue the nation for in times of military threat or the environment if his party has its way because they will have destroyed science education and the scientists themselves.
While I appreciate his ability to handle hostile interviews with aplomb, I would ask Mr. Lehrer to consider whether having Mr. Gingrich on the show didn't undermine the usual heady discourse most guests-- conservative and liberal alike-- bring to the topics.
Inviting someone with such an agenda, and who was so rude, and who spoke on such diliberately misleading and insincere terms wasn't provocative or challenging radio, it was merely off-putting.
I think this conversation as most of your political conversations are (aside from great, thoughtful, insightful etc.) are around a major fundamental point - trust of the people in those in power. If Mr. Gingerich was being honest than he has very interesting ideas. If he is being deceitful in order to lobby, than there would be an aggregious abuse of trust. I am often left with this question of trust especially given the parameters that these terms often put into, democratic, republican etc.
Thanks so much.
Emily,
Unfortunately I agree. Gingrinch is so partisan and has such an obvious agenda...as was abundantly clear from yesterday...nothing of value was really gained from having him on at all.
I would have to support having Gingerich on the show. I thought it was a very different agend than a lot of your guests, who are often different from each other. I found it very thought provoking.
Thanks
