  My firstborn daughter would not have tested into the G&T under the new standards. She did test into the G&T, however, in kindergarten and she attended Delta, a G&T middle school, and had straight A's except in her first semester.

  She scored well enough on the specialized test to attend either Stuyvesant or Bronx Science but chose the latter. Based on one of semester's worth of work, she is performing very well and I couldn't be happier with her education.

  I believe that the quality of the teaching in the G&T programs, especially in middle school, is responsible for how well she has done and that her academic trajectory might well have been different if she had attended general education programs.

  I have a younger daughter who did not do well on the OLSTAT administered for kindergarten admission and now the bar for entering the G&T in the first grade has been raised even higher. She will take the test but I believe that I will have to move out of Manhattan to a locality with a better school system.
