The nomination of Mukasey to the office of Attorney General likely has roots in the relationship between Mukasey and John M. Walker, Jr., formerly the Chief Judge for the Second Circuit. Judge Walker is Bush's cousin, having been appointed to the bench by George H.W. Bush. No doubt that Mukasey and Walker, as chief judges for the trial and appeals division of Federal Court in New York, had a close relationship.
This story has an unusual twist, one that under-reported this year. In October 2006, Judge Walker, while driving his SUV struck and killed a police officer on October 17, 2006. For reasons not clear, Judge Walker was not charged in connection with the death of the officer. After this event, Judge Walker resigned his position as Chief Judge of the Second Circuit.
