    Hi,

1970s feminist here. I learned long ago that there's a difference between fashion and style. I usually go out looking well put together regardless of what the Vogue September issues portrays.

And yes, you are judged by your appearance. Keep your nails clean, your hair combed, and your shoes of quality.

I love clothes. I hate fashion.

I'm not really into fashion but I can't get enough of TV shows like Project Runway.

high heels are very bad for posture - but what's the difference between wanting yourself to look nice, wanting your table to look nice, wanting your home to look nice?

Fashion is an industry! it is not an art form. haute couture might be an art form (like dior, not donna karan)

Well, to some it is important. It's like anything else, some people enjoy "dressing up" as it were and others look like schlubs[?] all the time, like me. I think it's fun and I enjoy looking at people who are into fashion and do it well. It is also an art as is anything to do with aesthetics. It's certainly not my thing but others enjoy it.

I find it upsetting that women are pressured to spend so much time, money and energy on fashion. I understand it can be an art-form. And to me, a vital aspect of feminism means women should be able to make their own choices. But considering we are still making .75 cents to men's $1, why are we expected to spend money we don't have on clothes, designer handbags, shoes, etc? Not only is it vapid consumerism, but maybe it's a way of keeping women down - financially?

As for what the guest called

taking pride in your appearance" - that was once known as "vanity."

It's all about wearing what makes you feel and look good! If a certain style is "in" but doesn't suit you, choose something else and I bet no one would even notice. It's one's own self conscienceness that makes it an issue.

The Journal recently carried a feature story

    Designers Push Formal Elegance.

    Will Fashion Follow?

Read it and consider for yourself how you want to react to the new dress code.

Fashion is fun. It is my creative outlet in my spreadsheet and cubicle filled world.

I would say it is an art. You don't see too many amazing outfits (amazing pieces maybe, but outfits not really). It takes a certain eye and sense of creativity to put things together.
