    The Bridge & Tunnel Crunch

Guest host David Cruz talks to “Gridlock” Sam Schwartz about the philosophy of infrastructure funding. When it comes to maintaining the City, are federal dollars a case of too little, too late? Also: is playing with your children a universal value—or is it just a part of American middle class culture? Also, we take a look at Latina sexuality with the editor of a new collection of erotica; Newark City Councilman Ron Rice Jr. calls for more strict enforcement of immigration laws; we get an update on federal support for congestion pricing; and we discuss the dying art of album liner notes.

Fighting Crime in Newark

Ron Rice, Jr., City Council member for Newark's West Ward, believes that if immigration laws had been upheld, New Jersey's triple homicide two weeks ago would not have happened.

How Do We Fix the Infrastructure?

Transportation engineer and Daily News columnist Sam Schwartz explains how federal funding discourages infrastructure maintenance, and Queens City Councilman David Weprin argues that the city needs a special commission to address infrastructure issues.

Juicy Mangos

Mujeres in Love

Michelle Herrera Mulligan, editor of Juicy Mangos (Atria Books, 2007), and Sofia Quintero, one of the book's contributors and founder of Chica Luna Productions, on their collection of erotica that celebrates Latina sexuality--and hoping their abuelas don't find out.

Dollars for Congestion Pricing

The federal Department of Transportation announced this morning that it will help to fund Mayor Bloomberg's congestion pricing plan. WNYC reporter Beth Fertig explains the details.

Culture at Play

Programs encouraging low income parents to play with their children the way upper and middle class parents do are gaining attention as a means of improving the children’s school performance. Utah State University anthropologist David Lancy questions the evidence supporting intervention, which is based in part of the work of University of Maryland sociologist Annette Lareau. They discuss this nexis of race, class, achievement and parenting.

Here's a recent article from The Boston Globe about parent-child play.
