Not another segment on self-congratulory Brooklyn bloggers! I guess the digital divide wins again: would it be so hard to do a segment on neighborhoods of Queens, the Bronx or Staten Island we don't normally hear about? Do I really have to listen to another Park Slope yuppie's ephemeral whingings?

I will be listening for the Republican debate reactions though.

Re the NYTimes coverage that apparently prompted this segment...

Reasons provided for the proliferation of blogs:

--"they undeniably give local residents a sense of empowerment"

--"a reflection of the borough’s relatively high ratio of homeowners to renters."

--"Brooklyn’s abundance of charged issues, coupled with its rich culture and long history"

    Unmentioned:

--the extremely low ratio of daily newspaper reporters to borough population

--the poor coverage in the mainstream media of such charged issues, including Atlantic Yards.

Trevor - Is there a large and diverse population of Queens bloggers?

  • [5] John Huntington from Brooklyn August 06, 2007 - 10:47AM

I read almost all the Brooklyn blogs using the indispensable Google Reader

  • [6] a from Bronx August 06, 2007 - 10:49AM

? Isn't this a re-run segment? Or is this yet another Brooklyn blogging piece?

Either way....sick of the rich Brooklyn yuppies too.....I'd love to hear some more about Queens, Bronx or Staten-Island as well

Brooklyn isn't the only place for blogs! Check out www.sourban.net, the best blog in the East Village.

There very well may be a "large and diverse" population of bloggers in other boroughs, but we would never know listening to this show. I'd be interested to hear about a blog that is not focused on gentrified areas full of mostly non-natives.

Folks, as the co-founder of the site, outside.in, that released the survey of Brooklyn bloggers, I would like to register this very serious complaint:

The word is "bloggiest" not "bloggingest."

Bloggingest is a ridiculous-sounding made-up word, whereas Bloggiest rolls off the tongue effortlessly.

    We demand an on-air correction.

How many Brooklyn bloggers (or NYC bloggers in general) are native NYCers?

Some Queens blogs that both break my heart and fascinate me, and make me wish I owned a car. Even before the scandal and rape charges, much of Central Queens blogs focused on the divisive Dennis Galagher.

    Joey In Astoria

One of the oldest Queens blogs, since 2005

    (No longer written by Joey.)

    http://astorianyc.blogspot.com/

    LIC NYC

Since 2003, arts and culture in LIC.

    http://www.licnyc.com/

    Queens Crap

"A website focused on the overdevelopment and "tweeding" of the borough of Queens in the City of New York" Can be scathing!

    http://queenscrap.blogspot.com/

    Juniper Park Patriots

(Just as scathing blog against Queens Crap)

    http://www.juniperparkpatriots.blogspot.com/

    Maspeth Village Idiots

    (Satire of JPP above)

    http://middlevillageidiots.blogspot.com/

    Forest Hills 72

(Seems to have a lot of Park Slope envy)

    http://foresthills72.blogspot.com/

    A Forest Hills Life

    (lots of food!)

    http://foresthillslife.blogspot.com/

    Queens Central

(political stuff, and other random stuff, too)

    http://www.queenscentral.com/

    Sunnyside Life

    http://s-sidelife.blogspot.com/

    Lost in the Ozone

(Ozone Park, Jamaica Bay politics and environmental concerns)

I think that I shall never see

A blog to equal a Brooklyn tree.

Ain't got no branches, got no roots,

Don't bear no flowers, bear no fruits.

  • [13] smegly August 06, 2007 - 02:03PM

makes me wonder what the gothamist and jeff jarvis think!

  • [14] Queens Crapper from Queens, NY August 06, 2007 - 07:55PM

Juniper Park Patriots is run by Dennis Gallagher and his cronies, in case you couldn't tell!

There is no better blog on the planet than the Bed Stuy Blog. PERIOD. Thanks for helping shine the spotlight on a true internet gem.
