    SUV Counting: The Results

    Drumroll, please: the results are in on our group journalism project for which over 400 of you counted the SUV’s and other cars on your block. We crunch the numbers and talk about what they mean. Also, Richard Gere on the Dalai Lama coming to New York and the Buddhist notion of emptiness; New York City Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum on the crackdown on illegally-tinted windows and New York Times sports columnist William Rhoden is our weekly special guest for the month of August, with so much about sports making front page news.

Crackdown on Tinted Windows

New York City Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum discusses a new legislative effort to ban illegally-tinted windows in an effort to protect police officers and curb terrorist activity.

Sporting Goods

New York Times sports columnist William C. Rhoden joins us every Thursday in August to talk sports. This week, he looks at the Baseball and Football Halls of Fame and how each sport deals with the issue of a player’s “character.” His book Forty Million Dollar Slaves: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of the Black Athlete is just out in paperback.

Fame and Enlightenment

Actor and activist Richard Gere talks about his Buddhist practice and the Dalai Lama’s visit to New York this Fall. The Dalai Lama’s visit is hosted by The Tibet Center and Richard Gere’s organization, Healing the Divide.

SUV Count Results

We announce the results of our S.U.V. "crowdsourcing" project. Associate producer, Jim Colgan, lays out the numbers and highlights the blocks with the highest and lowest percentages.

Then we look at what the numbers actually mean with Jamie Kitman New York Bureau Chief for Automobile Magazine and U.S. editor of the magazine for the U.K. television show “Top Gear.”
