Brian,
There is a fantastic organization right here in New York City called Project Enterprise that provides micro loans and business development services in the five boroughs. You don't have to look so far away to make a big difference in someone's life!
See www.projectenterprise.org for more information.
I've been lending through Kiva for the past seven months, and believe it's a great organization. It is great to see your money making a difference. In May the first loan I made was paid back, and I loaned it right back out.
Brian:
You should have written to your kids. I've supported PlanUSA for many years. I know that my money goes to their community - which I check out. But I always write to 'My Girls'. I feel this is important since I encourage them to get educated, ask them to send me their little drawings and poems or just a response.
They and/or their families respond and seem happy to have the contact.
Nicholas Kristof wrote a column about this subject several weeks ago. In fact he mentions Kiva in his article. I don't know the date of the column, but it was called, "You,Too,Can Be a Banker to the Poor."
I know this because I saved the article(and accidentally tore off the date). After reading it I was inspired to participate in this wonderful program. Never got around to it and eventually I completely forgot...until I heard this morning's show. Thanks for the reminder!
