The name for the Hudson "North River" did not completely disappear from use in the 50s as Hammill claimed at end of the show. Maybe "North River" disappeared from use by folks INLAND, all the examples Hammill gave were of landlubber talk. The Hudson is still called "the North River" by folks of the working waterfront (tug and barge crews, pilots, the coast guard's Vessel Traffic Service - similar to air traffic controllers of the water).
I have nothing insightful to contribute other than to say how much I have always appreciated Pete Hamill's insight, sense of fairness, and humanity. And, of course, his passion for this city. He seems to write with a New York accent. Go figure.
