Listeners call in to report the affects of global warming in their garden. Is there anything new growing on account of climate change?

    There is a big difference (but subtle) between global warming and local weather conditions. A warm summer/winter or a cold summer/winter is a local phenomenon and either will happen in the midst of climate change. The fact that we seem to be having warmer weather than usual is not necesarily due to "global warming" - more accurabely global climate change (which I believe is occurring). The problem is that if we fall into the trap of thinking that the warmer weather is direct evidence, then in a cold winter (which we could still have) we will think that global warming is disproved. There are always cycles and pockets of weather - global climate change has to do with the very gradual, very slight change in our global climate and that is measured in fractions of a degree.

    I grew up here but lived out in CA. I hope it gets a bit warmer here so I can have my prickly pears, figs and oranges back.
