On the immigration issue discussed, I think asking if illegal immigrants, overall, add more than they cost, is too simplistic.

As with any major policy, a key consideration is who pays and who benefits. The middle class subsidy of illegal immigrants' education and other social services (directly through taxes) and health care costs (indirectly through higher premiums as the insureds are charged more to cover the uninsured) means that the middle class subsidizing cheaper labor for business. I think this is a major objection to illegal immigration.

So what's new? Business, with their lobbyists, are constantly trying to socialize the costs and risks and privatize the profits (e.g., NIH basic research to develop new drugs, cleanup liability limitations of nuclear power plant owners).
