Frustrated at the lack of stimulating and accurate American history textbooks for grade school students, grandmother Joy Hakim set out in to compile a comprehensive guide. In 1993 it was published by Oxford University Press. Now that 10 volume work has now been turned into a 16-episode PBS series, hosted by Katie Couric. The companion book is called Freedom
