Oh Grandma, what big teeth you have

Off the coast of Long Island's North Fork, the high-security Plum Island is known as "Mystery Island" TO locals but the first ever labor strike at the animal disease research facility there has brought attention and scrutiny to the laboratory's operations. Also: "I felt that if I could have married Little Red Riding Hood," wrote Charles Dickens, "I should have known perfect bliss." But as Catherine Orenstein shows in her book, "Little Red Riding Hood Uncloaked," the heroine was not always portrayed so virtuously. She discusses how the tale changed according to sexual norms and moral values of the day. Then: during the Depression, the Works Projects Adminstration constructed astounding monuments to the common man -including pools. Before summer comes to an end, we'll look at the social and architectural history of New York city's pools.
