Happy Birthday YouTube: Our Favorite Videos Ever
Friday, April 23, 2010 - 10:00 AM
Youtube turns five today, and we want to share our favorite internet videos ever. Add your own! (one link only please) - and a line or two about why you love it - in the comments section!
The first YouTube video was uploaded on April 23, 2005. It's called Me at the zoo, and shows founder Jawed Karim at San Diego Zoo.
Lots more have been uploaded since then, and here are our favorites. Click here to expand this post and see all of our picks for the best Youtube video EVER...
Brian Lehrer: George Allen introduces Macaca
After this video of Virginia Governor George Allen went viral, pols of all stripes were put on notice that the public is watching, not just the media pros.
Megan Ryan: Charlie bit my finger - again!
I'll go with a classic. A few seconds of random family life that were hilarious and memorable to onlookers far and wide. I haven't watched it in years but can still hear that kid's voice, "ow, Chawlie."
Paige Cowett: Goat yelling like a man
Because Youtube is for laughing.
Lisa Allison: Runner Jumps Over Catcher in Amazing Play
I think youtube is great for catching the latest craziest flotsam and jetsam of pop culture, so my favorite is the last one I've seen.
Alan Smith: Auto-Tune the News #2
It’s delightful to go see the news stories we’ve reported on become musical masterpieces, and they even get some social commentary in there sometimes as well. Everyone else is representing “classic” you tube hits – Someone needs to bring the new school!
Jody Avirgan: Dress Sexy at My Funeral
On the drive between Gerlach and Empire, Nevada. The cameraman hits record, and the car lurches forward. A quick pan around to reveal his face, a bike, then back to the landscape. It's a private moment broadcast to the world, and the best incidental music video the band Smog could have hoped for. After watching this, a friend wrote me that "maybe before the internet this would have been a poem."
Valerie Lapinski: City relaxation .
A video that I accidentally found when researching web videos for a stress segment for Brian's TV Show! The music, the landscape, and the woman's regard for the chair...I just think it's fabulous and also a bit poignant. However, it will probably never go viral.
Rachel Senatore: Hey Jude
Alright, despite all the funny videos I've watched over and over again, I'm going to go with the Hey Jude kid. He makes me smile. Plus...it reminds me of the cassettes (that are still out there, somewhere) of my dad playing Bob Dylan songs on his guitar and five-year-old me singing along/shaking a tambourine in the background. I wasn't nearly as talented as this kid - and thankfully, that was long before YouTube...
Amanda Magnus: Crazy Indian Video... Buffalaxed!
Indian music video with an English transcription that I think is really funny and dead-on.
Sydney Beveridge: Box Tops - The Letter
When rock artist Alex Chilton died recently, I read up on his early work. After a few clicks, I came upon this 1967 hit of his "The Letter." I enjoyed the taste of entertainment tv of yore and seeing him (with quite a voice at 16!) in The Box Tops. The band has a few winks at the audience too--a nod to the independent rock to come (perhaps some of today's popsters will follow suit).
Youtube is ideal for showcasing beatboxing -- watching the performer twist his mouth and face is the only way to believe all those sounds are coming out of one person. Pretty amazing!
Matt Gurry: Planet Unicorn
I think the Planet Unicorn series represents Youtube at its best, actually: somebody creates a product that people would like; no one would ever spend money to distribute it; creator can get it out there nonetheless. The guys here did just that.
Okay, now it's your turn! Post a link to your one favorite (one only please!) and a line or two about why you love it in the comments section below.

Guys you need to watch this soso creative and brilliant video by Sorab Wadia. Its just marvelous in aspects of singing acting humour etc. Sorab you are really brilliant..
While a certain amount of empty-headed entertainment is fun, I'm more interested in youtube as a force for education and information.
This video, while admittedly less stupid than many, and hence less popular shows just what can be done by a skilled computer animator who wants to teach something, in this case, how we know the earth is round. I've used this in class, and it's terrific.

Pink Glove Dance
is the video the woman was talking about.....just looked it up....it's great.
My husband is Japanese and I am half-Japanese and have lived in Tokyo for eight years. A lot of what we watch on Youtube are Japanese videos that we can not get in NYC. Sumo matches, comedy shows, cooking programs, and much more.
We don't have a TV at home and have lived without one while we live in NYC and are fine without it. Most of what we want to find, can be found online, at places like Hulu, Comedy Central, etc.
Canon rock is great, but personally I love the Pachabel Rant: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdxkVQy7QLM Pity the poor cello player!

Definitely "I wanna be like Osama", from Jihad! The Musical. It is really funny, the words are tricky, but absolutely hilarious (way beyond most patter songs) the videography is clean and the sound crystal clear. NOT the usual YouTube stuff. I watch it very often - not a chance that the show can come to Mumbai - but it deserves a long run on Broadway. Ya gotta see this!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeDDb5VYwbY
"There Goes an A**Hole" is a perfect summation of what it feels like to have a bike stolen. The video maker got his hands on surveillance footage of the wheels being taken off his bike, and seeking some sort of catharsis he set the footage to song and therefore gets the last word. "I can get new tires, but you'll always be an a**hole." My all time fave.

This clip shows a scene from the 1896 Coronation of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and his wife, the Empress Alexandra. According to the posting, it is "one of the oldest filmed moving pictures" in existence. As an historian and monarchist, I have been delighted to see all of the historical and royal image clips there are on youtube.com. Long Live Youtube!

"Academy Award Winning Movie Trailer" is one of the most hilarious things I've seen in years. I think it's done by some NYU film students.

Title's in Japanese. Seach YouTube for "chintaijinkak". There are 4 vids. You want the one that's 3:05 mins posted Sept. 10, 2008. This gal is playing Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet on a Therimin hidden inside a Russian doll. Plus, she sings. GREAT.
A short film reflecting the juxtaposition of energy coursing through New York City. Ferocity and tranquility coexisting side by side. Sights, sounds, textures and aromas mix together to create a vast palette for the senses.

Youtube makes it so easy to share political viewpoints. I made this music video to a song my husband wrote and sings. It was filmed during a trip to Israel, much to my daughter's chagrin every time I whipped out the camcorder! It celebrates the meaning of Jerusalem to Jews.

I'm sure that a lot of people have already seen this but I still want to make mention of it. When The Flintstones were first broadcast, it was designed for more of an adult audience, sort of like The Simpsons. So it was not too tasteless that Winston's Cigarettes were an original sponsor.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXFjhpSXytk - yes - it's my own video - but it's a great story, if I say so myself! - I wrote it (and lived it) and my husband did a great job making it. Happy Birthday Youtube!!! (and thnx, as always WNYC for your wonderful programming!)

While most great YouTube moments reveal and revel in those unguarded moments, either family humor gone public or public figures losing their masks, this video The Battle at Krugar was the one that felt simultaneously mundane (vacation footage) and epic.

Hey all,
Here's the link to The Accidental Home Birth of Lou posted on November 17, 2009. I made it in honor of my second daughter and the lady who bore her on the first anniversary of the birth itself. It has gotten over 14,000 views already.
Here is the note: On November 18, 2008, Lou was born in our East Village studio apartment on accident. Papa delivered while on the phone with 911. Obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, here's the actual phone call with a slide show of images of Lou's first year of life.
WARNING: The recording contains the sounds of a real birth. Lots of screaming. Surprisingly, no profanity.
If you want to see the images without all the dramatic audio then click on The Accidental Home Birth with Ravi Shankar. This song is what was playing randomly on our IPod playlist during the ordeal.
Peace.

You don't have to know who Huell Howser is to crack up at this (sortof) tribute video, in fact I think it's more exceptional as a "funny video" without any context at all. The late Mitch Hedberg's self made movie clip is also good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dW-ryo1SnqE

Sometimes I search youtube with random words. One time I searched "communist bikini." Besides finding great videos on the communist bloc band "Bikini" I found this great Slovakian beauty contest from 1966. The Slovakian band the "Beatmen" are playing in the background. This is almost Hitchcock style because there are so many little details that are unintentionally obscure -- like the lead singer's cracked coke bottle glasses and his really sharp looking teeth! And the girls frolicking in the industrial showers.
