Vote for Your Favorite Uncommon Economic Indicators Video
Friday, July 10, 2009 - 10:00 AM
Your Uncommon Economics Indicators is now 6 months old, with over 600 stories and more than 450 contributors. To celebrate our half birthday, we sent a challenge out to our collaborators and to WNYC listeners, inviting them to send us uncommon VIDEO economic indicators. Twenty people responded with unique points of view on the economy’s effects on their lives and their neighborhoods. Cast your vote for one of our semi-finalists below.
The top three choices will be screened for our guest judges in the Greene Space and the winner will have their video screened this summer by Rooftop films.
Thanks to everyone who put the time and love into your videos. We really enjoyed every submission, and altogether, they help tell the story of how the recession is affecting each of us.
You can view all the submissions on our Youtube channel.
NOTE: This poll closed at 12 p.m. on July 24th. Thanks for your 1,258 votes!

Shoemaker gentleman video gets my vote. Such a wonderful looking man and such a wise man! This represents the best of the human condition...a person who carries on with hope even when things are tough with compassion for his fellow men who are also struggling. (Runner up is Hal Hala...very artistic!)
The darkest hour is just before the dawn.
Great work!
Life on Location - i like this one
i like this one.
My votes:
1-Royce...you know nothing
2-The great recession has...
3-Stuck in the rain
4-Listen
7th Ave has my vote. Sad to see a once vibrant neighborhood looking so forlorn.
Bond and State!!!!
voted!
Whoa- Congratulations to all the contestants. It's a tough call, but Bond and State really blew me away. I can't wait to see the follow-up!
Great mini documentary on small businesses in Brooklyn. The first has a more grim perspective on the future, but in the end the merchants tend to look up and see a positive twist on the recession. Great work Gaby. Awesome that you could use some of Clement's work too.
Bond&State. Great work!
My very favorite is Bond and State! Excellent work!
video: F.G. Illustrated: Hala Hala’s
Life on Location: I laughed, I cried. It's a strange new side of greenpoint - the next movie capital of the east.
7th Ave Blues is magical!
Bond and State for sure! Very moving
7th avenue blues is in the lead? This film is totally unoriginal. I'm shocked that Jazzgiving isn't getting more votes.
I vote for the two elderly ladies. It's one of my economic nightmare come trued. I wish there was more of her!
Loved it, so touching!
Very moving, human and full of hope ...
Bond and State, no doubts!!!
BOND AND STATE! Simple, eloquent, and moving. A poignant economic indicator.
yay sean!!
I like Chris Tignor's video. But what's going on with the fire-lighters at 0:27?
The Eddy work is terriffic!
7th ave blues is amazing/
Seventh Av by Sean McGee shows the most original idea without words. Pictures are worth a thousand words.
I vote for 7th Avenue Blues. Here's hoping business' comes back. Such a great neighborhood.
I'm one of the 19 votes for Jazzgiving. This was so indicative of what happens when economies contract. Friends get together to make a better life. NOT moan about the way things are. Oh well. I'm going to remain positive and look for opportunities.
Maybe if we look up, clear our heads of the noise, super-active technicolor visions, give ourselves a chance to think, we would gain a sense of perspective. Maybe!
Hala Hala makes such an observence of what an average day in America is these days. Drink energy drinks to work more hours and work more hours to pay more for energy drinks...what a concept! Great work of art...on many levels.
voting for life on location
Energy Drink wins - hands down.
I can see how Royce is too out there for WNYC. And it wasn't made for the contest, But it should get a special mention or something.
Mo energy. drink.
loved the arabic illustration. the increased purchase of energy drinks to make people excited about "finding work" or working more hours is definately an uncommon economic indicator.
LOL
[...] We’ve written about WNYC before, but this time, they’re teaming up with Rooftop Films. Share your stories New Yorkers. We’d love to hear them. [via Rooftop Films, WNYC] [...]
Sorry, but how do I vote on another video besides these five?
I don't see my video in this grouping. Do I vote at YouTube?
Thanks!
Juliana
Life on location!
I think I found my religion
the video"life on location" is the best.it contains so many moments of our time both humorous and depressing.
I noticed that the videos go highest to lowest votes. Is your website automatically ordering them that way or does it show that people gradually stop watching/voting as they go down the page ;^). Very cool project, would like to see the survey interface randomized...
Maybe it's an uncommon economic indicator that i have enough time on my hands to notice - LOL.
excellent, authentic depiction of a brooklyn bodega
StJohn youre a star

i vote for Chris Tignor's video
This one gets my vote!

Maybe Royce was too out there for WNYC, and I guess it wasn't made specifically for the contest. It deserves 'best thing on you tube' though.
I like all the videos but I vote for ROYCE.
I like the idea of No Lost, No Gain. It gives hope, that we lost now, but you can get stronger with faith and in the future be okay! Good job!! :) Val
IT IS SIMPLY WONDERFUL
Hala Hala just made me guffaw when he said "Energy drink"! Anyone who can make me laugh aloud these days gets my vote.
7th avenue blues imagery says it all!
Your web site is very difficult to navigate in general and this one concerning the vote for the short videos in particular. It is not clear at all how to cast a vote.
7th Ave Blues captures the feeling of creeping desolation in my favorite neighborhood, a true village where neighbors should be able to support each other if things were right in the economy.
I 3rd the comment on Royce and write in my vote for the Royce Video. These people at wnyc know not what they do as far as running contests. This is silly voting procedure.
No gain no loss
All these videos are such moving work, it was difficult to choose just one. My gratitude to the film makers and to wnyc for giving their reflections a forum.
this is but a snapshot of much greater retail decline. Woe is us.
I 2nd this comment!
I can’t believe that the video of the two elderly ladies was not picked as a semi finalist. With all due respect and I do like all the videos but the Royce video has to be one of the best things I’ve seen on youtube. How did you pick your semi finalist? Or as Royce would say ” God on a Wheel!” Is it because it is too real? Because the word Shiit is used. Is it too violent. It shows real emotion and behavior that reflects Uncommon Economic Indictors!
