BL Show Cup of Joe Suggestions
Tuesday, July 07, 2009 - 10:57 AM
Our June 30th segment on the rise of gourmet coffee culture in the city initiated an outpouring of opinion and enthusiasm. Here's the segment:
Below we've put together a map of some BL show listeners' favorite spots to grab - or linger over- a coffee. Of course the carts and bodegas whose 75 cent cups get us all through the morning are too numerous to map. But we know they are on the personal maps that listeners carry in their heads. One thing is clear, while our listeners lead very different lives, everyone can unite over their love of a good cup of joe. This is an ongoing project, so if you missed the original segment, feel free to tell us your favorite coffee shop in the comments below.

Stumptown Coffee at Brooklyn Label is amazingly different and rich, iced or hot.
Also a great place in Park Slope is Red Horse Cafe on 6 ave and 12 th St. They really know how to make cappucino there and its nice spot to read and do work with WiFi.
La Bagel Delight also in Park Slope is good for morning bagel and iced Hazelnut.
Cafecito Bogota in Greenpoint really does have the best cup though.
Sicaffe on Lexington Avenue and 69th or 70th. It's strong - ice coffee, too. Probably the closest I've felt to getting coffee in Italy. The feel of the place, too, captures that.
One of the absolute best coffee shops in New York is the Hungarian Pastry Shop on Amsterdam and 111th St. It's a kind of Old-World-International-Academic atmosphere. The coffee is good and bottomless, the pastries and sandwiches are delicious, and the owners are really nice.
Grey Dog Coffee is the best!

If you click on the little tab on the top right of the map and change to "map" view as opposed to "ter" view, you should get a little more information about neighborhoods.
Happy caffeinating!

I don't live in NYC, but I am a coffee-lover who also listens to BL show!
My favorite place to grab a cup of joe is:
Small World Coffee
14 Witherspoon Street
Princeton, NJ 08540
They have the best coffee anywhere!
The map would be more useful if in addition to street addresses the pop-ups indicated in what area--park slope, greenpoint, etc.--the shop is located. It's hard to discern from the Google map.
The Peekskill Coffee house 101 South Division Street. Great coffee, with high metal-stamped ceilings, the best funky mismatched furniture.
Think Coffee
Mercer between 3rd and 4th Streets
Not only is their coffee fair trade, but the milk is from a local farm. They also have great art on the walls and have bands play on the weekends. Great ambiance. But its tough to get a seat.
Tasty's Diner
Ditmars Blvd near 33rd Street in Astoria, Queens, NY
dubcafe
348 W. 14th St.
New York, NY 10014
The best cup of coffee I've ever had. Period.
ah.. so many.
The Verb, 218 Bedford Ave in Williamsburg Brooklyn. Great iced coffee, good spot to sit outside and watch folks stroll by.
Brooklyn Standard, 188 Nassau Ave in Greenpoint Brooklyn. Great spot to grab a cup of Stumptown to go, or sit outside on the bench. Open late, good food.
Brooklyn Label, 180 Franklin St in Greenpoint Brooklyn. Great coffee to stay or go, best brunch in the area.
CAFECITO BOGOTA
1015 Manhattan Avenue
Brooklyn, NY 11222
The best (Colombian) coffee can be had (oddly enough) not in Queens, but in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. =)
The most amazing soy lattes and specialty Colombian coffees in NYC, seriously.
The Panorama of My Silence-Heart Cafe
84-73 Parsons Blvd
Jamaica, NY 11432

The only cafe of it's kind in this part of Queens...
Aubergine Cafe
Delicious coffee, friendly atmosphere -- a great neighborhood place. Corner of 50th St and Skillman Ave. in Woodside.
Boneshakers!
134 Kingsland Avenue
Brooklyn, NY 11222
GOTHAM COFFEE HOUSE
Neighborhood: Upper East Side
1298 2nd Ave (between 68th St & 69th St)
New York, NY 10021

Staten Island is not even on the map! Everything Goes Bookcafe is my favorite cafe & (used) bookstore in NYC. Fairtrade organic coffee, cool people, cheap books, free wifi, near the ferry. I'm a fan!
Our favorite diner is the Four Star in Union City, New Jersey. I'm not a coffee drinker, but love the breakfast specials there.
My favorite coffee joint is in Boerum Hill. Victory, 71 Hoyt St., small, neighborhood hub and the owner is often behind the counter.
I think the best coffee is at La Colombe Cafe at 311 church st. at the corner of lispenard. wonderful! plus nice ambiance & staff. I think they've opened a new place on lafeyette north of prince.
Little Cupcake Bakeshop
9102 Third Avenue
Bay Ridge, Brooklyn
'wichcraft at Broadway & West 32nd Street (and other locations). Consistently good, located on a pretty little pocket park with plenty of seating.
my fave coffee shop is the native bean on ave. A btwn. 3rd & 4th (i think) but its really nice and kewl
By far the best coffee in my neighborhood is at Variety on Graham Ave in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. They do french press & excellent espresso drinks with Stumptown coffee. Bonus: good hangout space & friendly staff!
There's a new Gimme! at 228 Mott Street, Soho. Also, a Columbe Torrefaction @ 319 Church St (just below Canal). Abraço is the best I've ever had, but it's a coffee bar, almost nowhere to sit. if you want great coffee and the ultimate coffee + ambience experience, nothing beats McNally Jackson Books 52 Prince Street.
On East 73rd Street and Madison Ave. Great coffee, not cheap, but one of the best cappuccinos in town.
La Colombe, at Church and Lispenard Streets. A favorite from Center City Philadelphia, transplanted to NYC! Wonderful wonderful coffee...
I love the iced coffee at Choice Market at 318 Lafayette Ave in Clinton Hill!
Champion Coffee
1108 Manhattan Ave
Greenpoint, Brooklyn
