Can't look at the aughts without the contested Presidential election of 2000 --
Gore's mistakes; the Nader candidacy; the media's failure to expose and the public's failure to understand Bush's Iraq agenda; bad ballot design in FL; the Supreme Court's unprecedented interference in the election all arguably led to 9/11 - or am I just engaging in wishful thinking? 9/11 leads to the Afghanistan and Iraq wars; the Patriot Act; the catch-up ball Homeland Security conglomeration; Guantanamo. Trillions of dollars spent in low-return 'make work' activities rather than invested in activities that truly make the citizens more productive.
In my view, we couldn't have Obama without Bush, we couldn't have Bush w/o the shot-out 2000 election.
