how are you going to keep people from destroying them ? making them more hightech, while at the same time as close to indestructable as possible. seems to me to be a huge obstacle. vandals will be vandals.
Hope this helps...
I also am not a Facebook member, so I contacted Rachel Haot and she provided this Tumblr link, where you can scroll down (past the blue Facebook vote image) and see the designs:

Well, it seems one cannot see or vote on the payphone issue without signing up for Facebook. Totally unfair, and elitist in its own way. Shame on WNYC.
The biggest offender on the "ideas" list was the one where you LEAVE your phone at a charging station somewhere, walk around and ... something to do with seeing ads everywhere, or suffering ads dropped onto your device when you return to retrieve your phone.
Brain. Please, please, please take these kinds of guests to the woodshed on all these issues. Thanks for the caller who came on to say this is for elitists because it was the only truth I heard on this issue.
Forward thinking? HA! More BS. F U C K FACEBOOK!!!!
Ideas are a dime a dozen. How about just some simple, PRACTICAL improvements on payphones, or while we're at it, the trains?
Oh, no cost constraints! WONDERFUL.
your link to the designs sucks, I'm not on facebook, how can I see them>
How aout payphones which actually work? Try to find a functioning payphone!
Obviousy the phone companies would prefer to eliminate payphones and have everyone old enough to make a phonecall as a wireless subscriber.
I want a payphone that dispenses soda.
Handicaps. LOL. That ain't PC.
This is another distraction from the real issues in this city. JUST FIX AND MAINTAIN THE DAMN PHONES.
Oh puh leeaze...Verizon put WiFi on their payphones more than 5 years ago to much fanfare and it faded away.
The piezo-electric has absoslutely no economic credibility. Piezo electric devices are way too expensive to take advantage of the miniscule energy we generate walking.
These are so much of the same old same old...
Rest Rooms for cab drivers!! (and other needy folks)
Why can't you just show the different phones instead of putting me on facebook? Forget it.
I hope some of the newly designed phones have a self-sanitizing feature so that the crud and dribble and who knows what else--you know like those people who wipe their butts but don't wash their hands afterwards!--one finds on those phones.
Can't see the pictures you are talking about on facebook!
I would love to see the designs, but the link just goes to a Facebook page with no pictures. do I have to be on Facebook to see the,? ridiculous!
Yeah they stayed connected during blackouts but Verizon is determined to do away with copper wire which is what makes these phones stay connected during blackouts. I am strongly in favor of keeping payphones on the streets of the city but I'm suspicious of ANYTHING this sleazebag mayor wants to do.
What is this crap about only voting on Facebook? What is WRONG with this city government?
Can they invent a pay phone that sanitizes itself?
So we have to vote on Facebook?? PFFT. Ridic. Choose whatever dumb design you want, I'm not going near the grid trap called Facebook.
Just make the phones work properly. Thank you.
Yeah, fancy pay phones. That's nice. Can we just have regular pay phones that work and aren't tapped by the CIA and FBI?
What is the chief digital officer of NYC doing to protect citizens (Muslims) from digital spying by the NYPD?
