how are you going to keep people from destroying them ? making them more hightech, while at the same time as close to indestructable as possible. seems to me to be a huge obstacle. vandals will be vandals.

Well, it seems one cannot see or vote on the payphone issue without signing up for Facebook. Totally unfair, and elitist in its own way. Shame on WNYC.

The biggest offender on the "ideas" list was the one where you LEAVE your phone at a charging station somewhere, walk around and ... something to do with seeing ads everywhere, or suffering ads dropped onto your device when you return to retrieve your phone.

How aout payphones which actually work? Try to find a functioning payphone!
Obviousy the phone companies would prefer to eliminate payphones and have everyone old enough to make a phonecall as a wireless subscriber.

The piezo-electric has absoslutely no economic credibility. Piezo electric devices are way too expensive to take advantage of the miniscule energy we generate walking.

Yeah they stayed connected during blackouts but Verizon is determined to do away with copper wire which is what makes these phones stay connected during blackouts. I am strongly in favor of keeping payphones on the streets of the city but I'm suspicious of ANYTHING this sleazebag mayor wants to do.
