To the one who wants info re. landlord and tenant dealings: get info at the L & T Court, 111 Centre St. Manhattan; and ask Councilwoman Gale Brewer about her annual info sessions on like topics. To Rachel in Sunset Park: I'll take that as a challenge to write a teaching verse for a handout. To Tony from Canarsie: yes - to distinguish flim-flammery from reality, for those who can't - especially when not understanding reality is liable to mean the death of the Panet.
A course on pseudoscience and other flim-flammery would be nice.
So many people I know have bought hearing aids they don't use. I would like to have a class on how to buy hearing aids.
For the person who wanted a "hip" class on foreign affairs that appealed to other than gray-haired people, there are many such classes at the NYU School of Continuing Education and Professional Studies. These classes are geared to people out in the work world and usually attract young professionals. My husband teaches some of these classes -- and is fairly "hip." But I should mention that he does have gray hair.
In response to the woman who was looking for a class that teaches how to get out of a bathtub - our Fall Stop...MOVE STRONG™ program teaches getting out of the bathtub, getting off the floor, reaching in high cupboards, picking something off the floor, getting in and out of cabs etc. The program also offers targeted exercise to increase flexibility, balance and strength, all of which are helpful for not only getting out of the tub but for decreasing ones risk for falls.
Our classes are available at the JCC Manhattan and at the Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mt. Sinai Hospital.
For more information - Fall Stop...MOVE STRONG™ at www.fallstop.net
Badly needed: a course on basic ethics, ethics of everyday life. Wo teaches this. Is it taught anywhere.
Retirement: plan it years in advance, not for the money but for a reason to get out of bed everyday and fill the day with some accomplishment.
tom from lic asked how do successful people get so many things done in a day?
the answer DELEGATE
@ Tom from LIC - you get more done if you do a little on each project everyday. It's a process of starting and ending projects in a flow so that one doesn't cram too much and get overwhelmed.
I live in Los Angeles and listen to your station via Internet Radio, being from NY.
A class teaching how to speak proper english would be beneficial especially to the younger generation.
How about a class for WNYC Producers on how not to delete comments just because you don't agree with the sentiments of the poster.
Science! Why not extend the high school lessons without the need for college enrollment? Just get people together who want to know more about the world, protect themselves against political misinformation, and ... Well ... Get the king of information fortification that NPR always provides! :)
How finance and money really work in society.
The real history of race/gender-based oppression and terror in America, and their ongoing effects.
How about a class on how to limit sexual jealousy?
A class called the
Retirement Dojo
that would teach people how to fall safely
and practice those skills daily
as well as warm up streaches, etc
(as is done in a dojo)
andrea -- sounds like a great singles idea. but as far as talking/learning about most things and particularly foreign policy i'd (30 something man) rather listen to old people any day... your logic would dictate the same strategy of course...
For the gentleman who needed guidance with medical bills, the recent Time magazine article, Poisoned Pill (By Brill) goes into all of the details of medical billing. It's really a good guide
In my neighbor, we need a class to inform children of the benefits of using garbage cans and recycling and the impact of littering. Perhaps, they can then teach their parents and our neighborhood would be much cleaner.
A class on how to call into a radio show, speak clearly, extemporaneously without falling all over your words, and without your heart beating out of your chest, and without saying, "Thank you for taking my call." I would definitely take that class.
how do successful people get so many things done in a day?
Put hose on while sitting -- not on your back!
Please suggest whatever class you would like to take to us at Curious-on-Hudson http://curiousonhudson.com. We welcome people who want to teach here as well.
There should be a class on fact checking, and it should be required for all people who work for news outlets
Would love a class on How to Cut your Boyfriend's hair!
Bargaining! I admire people who can do it.
How do you make the bridge between your talents and society -- my family has a lot of talents, but we have no success in getting those talents to become a business/service that really pays.
Ya put those hose on one leg at a time.
Classes about pros and cons of marriage..the real deal! No one prepares you..it's not all romance and fairy tale...young adults should know it...
Picking up on discussions/controversies about writers and getting paid:
How not to be underpaid.
Also:
How to get writing/media professionals to advocate for themselves (rather than undermine the profession).
Relatedly, negotiation and presentation skills.
We definitely need a course to teach people their basic rights, particularly when they talk to police and officials.
just like "to Sir with Love", how about a class for all 18 year olds on how to live life like an adult. Counting back change, using a checking account, budgeting, keeping a calendar. etc..
How about a class about the very edge of human knowledge. What are the questions that science has yet to answer.
I'd take a class on reality. What is reality? What do we do that brings us closer to what is real vs what we think and do that brings us into fantasy.
Are we talking about any kind of education or college education? I'd like to see more robust and mandatory drivers ed classes paid for by a tax on car sales. The way people drive is ridic. So many people don't even know basic rules of the road anymore.
