This is a very satisfying time for us liberals! I heard Reihan Salam last night on the News Hour spouting the same effluent. The Rs seem so shocked that the president isn’t adopting the Romney platform and is actually mapping out a second term that will benefit most people. Republicans want their “benefit the few” programs adopted in a spirit of cooperation, while discounting Mitch McConnell’s statement on the Senate floor that his party’s sole purpose was to make Obama a one-term president. Brings to mind the Claude Rains' line from Casablanca “I'm shocked, shocked that there's gambling at Rick's"

In his second inaugural address, Obama said that after 4 years of economic stagnation, international decline, smearing of the business community and ugly & divisive class warfare … he’s going to do even MORE of the above.

I'm not an endorser of virtually everything Mr. Slam says, but in defense of his speaking style, he has always been a fast talker. I've become frenetic just watching him on Bill Maher's show.

Anyway, Bush announced that he had a "mandate" and he wanted to privatize SS based on that mandate. He felt he had earned the right to do whatever the h*ll he wanted to do. The Reps cheered him on. Now, after 4 years of Republican gridlock the Reps are wondering why the prez didn't announce that he wants to work with them.

Judging by Reihan Salam's panicked and hyper active tone of voice, it does seem Republican's realize history is by passing their reactionary agenda and the only tactic they have left is to put words into President Obama's mouth and spin them in the most nasty and malevolent way. The guest needs to take a chill pill, he comes off as pre-recorded and sped up.

So the Republicans were recalcitrant toward the White House at every turn, the dumped on most of Obama's initiatives, compared him to Carter connoting a feckless leader and now they wonder why Obama didn't reach out to them in his Inauguration speech. Oh I see, they thought the President was an idiot.

While I often disagree with Reihan Salam,I truly appreciate his reasoned approach and willingness to go anywhere to speak his mind.

That being said, his characterization of Obama's (and implicitly all progressive) collective action as NECESSARILY equating to "centralized Federal government" solutions. I think that perception is part of a standard set assumptions, largely unfounded and unsubstantiated, by American conservatives and libertarians. (I would say that even economic Neoliberals do not understand collective action in this manner.)

Did I mis-hear or did the guest inadvertently got the Churchill quote reversed - I heard him say the quote as democracy was the best form of government except for all the others (which is the opposite of the quote, and the point the guest was trying to make).

Yesterday I heard a republican in the news claim that they had hoped for a speech like Mr. Obama's 2008 nomination acceptance speech. If the GOP is yearning for the "old Obama", we may be getting somewhere.

What, no segment on Beyonce's pre-recorded yet still with two errors version of the Star-Spangled Banner!

President Obama, they say, outlined an unapologetic progressive/liberal agenda for his second term. No centrist at all. There should be a large fight coming.

On the other hand, President Obama run on and will not back down on his support or abortion. This is the 40th year, and international events might overtake any plans President Obama has for his second term.
