Doha, QATAR: The newsroom at the headquarters of the Al-Jazeera satellite news channel
Brian Stelter, New York Times reporter and author of the Media Decoder column, discusses Al Jazeera's purchase of Current TV and its future presence on American television.
roseellen, Please send my worst regards to your osama bin laden.
>Time Warner already runs Al Jazeera
Care to provide any supporting evidence to support your claim?
I've watched a little bit of AJ here in the US and found it to be similar to BBC. Apart from its foreign "scary-sounding", they are BBC's counter part.I can't say I agree with their "politics" entirely (or BBC's), but I watch FOX News and, really, it's not the big deal as some would have us believe - listening to others voicing opinions other than our own, that is.If I owned a TV, I would watch AJ News.
Time Warner already runs Al Jazeera,so I really don't understand the p.o.v. of this segment.
Once again the reality on the ground trumps the right wing media propaganda .Not only are those muslims still there-doing their thing after 11 years of our wars and propaganda against them-lo and behold they dare have a media outlet that gives a different perspective on Osama[for many people-a hero]. Welcome to the 21st c of the people-all people -even those who don't see things our way.The world and it's people do not belong to america-and aljazeera is a testament to that fact and that right wing outlets like fox and abc are getting bent out of shape about it is a testament to their[right wing america/ right wing zionist] desire to control the narrative and their frustration that free speech means in the 21st c every one can and will have their say! It's not so easy to control the world right wing america or to control the media anymore.
@Truth & Beauty:
I agree that the way consumers have power is with purchasing power. What I don't like is outright censorship. I remember the PBS "Frontline" episode a few years ago when the subject was Al-Jazeera and its difficulty getting into the US market and how many of the fears about the channel in the US were unwarranted. There was a US military general that was interviewed in the program that was disappointed that Al-Jazeera and other Mideast news networks were being blocked from US cable carriers on fear, not merit.
If you don't like a channel, then don't watch it and don't support its advertisers. But don't deny other consumers who don't agree with you from the opportunity of watching and judging the content.
If you want to hear how "indians"and blacks and poor people are badly treated in the US, go to PRESS TV, Iran's "news" channel to present everything you always hated about America every day.
once Murdoch dies ... which wil be soon ... his Chinese wife is waiting to complete the turnover to China of this media giant... oh yes it is coming you wait and see. The Washington Times and all its conservative minions are owned by the right wing elements in South Korea......
Get O' Reillied up about that!
Maybe now people will catch on that putative liberal saint Al Gore is a big fat hypocrite. What kind of strings did he pull to accomplish this successful failure? Let's not forget that Al Jazeera is totally financed by petroleum money! So much for global warming. And how about the sleazy sex harassment scandal which somehow the media overlooked? http://www.thesmokinggun.com/documents/sex/al-gore-crazed-sex-poodle
If anti-American and anti-Israel "news"is what you enjoy, no better station for it than Iran's PRESS TV. Just type in address "PRESSTV" and watch live from their webside directly from Teheran.
to me as a Native American, Al jazeera IS REAL News . I want it and I watch IT and I treasure it . TWC should be ashamed of itself ...Why should the many millions who would like to take into account this perspective be denied and yet subjected to all sorts of fluff on cable systems with over 2000 channels of nothing (many repeats of the same thing)....
We just visited friends a few miles outside Baltimore and they are able to get Al Jazera. They really like the International news it provides.
Al-jazeera is channel 92 on TWC.
Deal closed on Wednesday 1.2.13. Gore did not get tax advantage.
You can watch most if not all news states over the internet. You don't need cable, just an internet connection.
Al Jazeera English TV is available on www.aljazeera.com. I watch it on my mobile devises all of the time. It is an excellent source of International news and like another caller stated - "balanced"
Cable is not "air waves." However they are laid down on city and under other public streets.
FYI, you can watch Al Jazeera online for free here http://www.aljazeera.com/watch_now/
I've never watched Current TV, but during the presidential debates, I was able to watch the debates live on Al-Jazeera via my Roku box. I found their coverage to be truly fair and balanced. No snarky comments from talking heads, just real news from real journalists.
I wonder, as so-called smart TV'S become more popular, allowing the likes of Al Jazeera able to simply stream their content directly to television, via their website.
Will the the importance of having a cable channel spot not diminish?
It's time all customers stand up to TWC, they absolutely suck. It's time we stand up against the cable companies and get some of the power of OUR airwaves.
The best propaganda channel in the world is Iran's PRESS TV which I watch daily. They present their anti-American and anti-Israeli propaganda so beautifully that I really learn from it. If you want to learn how to do propaganda really well, watch PRESS TV on your computer or through your Roku device.
al jazeera had the best coverage of egypt revolution.
People here tend to forget that the US audience is only 5% of the world's media audience. Ever since the fall of barriers to international media in the Muslim world, the former Soviet bloc, China and the rest, it is viewship OUTSIDE the US that determines the profitability of international news organization like BBC, Al Jazeera, and a host of others. The old carnard that "Jews control the media" might have had a tiny core of truth 30 years ago, but the world has changed a lot since then. Today, international news must cater to vast Muslim, Chinese, Russian, European and other non-US audiences. And that is reflected in the way they present their "news." It certainly means a generally anti-Israel POV to accommodate their vast Muslim audiences today.
Where is Al-Jazeera on TWC, I've never seen it anywhere. And BTW it's not only in this that the US is behind the rest of the world. But seriously can you tell me what channel Al-Jazeera is on?
I love Governor Spitzer's show and I hope that MSNBC picks him up.
I heard that Ed Shultz is leaving the 8 pm hour and that various current substitute hosts are candidates to take the slot. MSNBC would be crazy to not put Spitzer there. Because of his experience as AG and Governor, Spitzer is even better than Olbermann in carrying the progressive message.
Oprah's channel was off to a slow start, only now gaining momentum, mainly because most people had no idea where it is. I suspect the same is true with Current TV.
Nowadays, companies come and go, bought and sold and moved around like pawns. The only way We, the People, have to show our support or displeasure is with our WALLETS. You don't like a show or a station or an owner or a political position, don't watch, listen, buy products sold by their sponsors, etc. We, the People, are really in charge if only we'd take charge. We, the People, keep WNYC up and running and We, the People, can take down Al Jazeera by putting the kibosh on their funding. Period.
Yes, Time Warner absolutely should carry Al Jazeera.
Wassup with Time Warner Cable completely deleting channel 103? What is this?
Every day I can't wait to watch Eliot Spitzer (my favorite person) on his Current TV show *Viewpoin*. It's one of my favorite shows. Well, Wednesday night the show returned after over a week break for the holidays. Suddenly at 8:09 the screen went black for a split second then a blue screen appeared with the following, "This channel is no longer available on Tim Warner Cable. Visit www.TWCConversations.com to find other sources for similar programming." WHAAAA the f---!!? I couldn't believe it, in the middle of a broadcast the channel was canceled. I kept trying thinking it was just another f-up of TWC (they constantly mess up programs and usually at important spot things get scrambled either visually or aurally). I couldn't believe it. Poor Eliot Spitzer gets screwed no matter where he goes (no pun intended, I truly have the highest respect for him and his intelligence) and poor us now without Eliot Spitzer... AGAIN. What to do. I want my Eliot. Al-Jazeera bring him back, please.
Bill O' Reilly had a hissy fit on his show last night - because Al Gore (and his senior partners) had the nerve to sell his failing channel to Al Jazeera. Funny that grumpy Bill has no problem with his boss - Rupert Murdoch, doing business in China and in other countries ruled by dubious regimes.
